What is the process for obtaining a tourist visa in Yangon, Myanmar, and how do embassies handle eligibility verification?

Hello! Does anyone have experience with getting a tourist visa in Yangon Myanmar lately?

I'm curious if they will tell you if you are eligible for the tourist visa before you hand in all your paperwork or if they will tell you the next day when you receive and pick up your passport. (hopefully to avoid a VOID stamp).

Also, which embassies would inform you before you submit your paperwork if you're eligible for the tourist Visa or not?

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a tourist visa in Yangon, Myanmar, embassies typically review your paperwork upon submission. If there are issues, you'll need to correct them before your application is accepted. The decision regarding visa approval is not made by the front desk staff, so you won't know if your visa is approved until after submission. It's important to have all your documents in order and to use new US currency when applying.

I was in Yangon a couple of years ago. They're pretty easy. As always have your paperwork in order. Also be sure to have brand new US currency. No joke mint quality.

All of the embassy's check over your paperwork when you submit your application. If there is a problem with your paperwork or you're missing something they will make you correct it before they accept your application.

As to whether or not they will approve a visa for you or not, the front desk staff don't make those determinations. You won't know until your application is submitted if your visa is approved or not. Also, VOID stamps are only given if a visa is issued incorrectly. If you visa is denied you'll get a denied stamp.

Typically if they accept your application but then deny your visa, they do stick it in the passport and then stamp it void. I believe the workflow is some lower lever staff puts it in and then it goes to a final OK from the consul, and if he says no they then stamp it "void". In this case, they keep your money as well- some have speculated this is their main motivation for doing it this way.

Most consulates will tell you upfront, in which case they just tell you no and won't take your money or passport at the application stage, in which case nothing at all is recorded. MOST consulates, if they take your passport, they give you the visa.

I haven't heard of any consulate stamping "denied". It is either they refuse the whole application, or visa sticker with "void".

I haven't heard of Yangon doing the void thing. Phnom Penh is notorious for it and there are reports of it happening in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh as well. India also apparently does it but they only issue to Indians so unlikely to affect you.

The "void" stamp doesn't affect anything beyond your losing your money, I don't believe it's currently seen as a black mark in any way. Phnom Penh I believe adds "without prejudice" to make that clear.

Thanks for the information. I was under the impression that some embassies may tell you right away if it will be accepted or not, because that's what an agent in Penang told me.

Are there some embassies where they will not give you the denied stamp even if it is not approved?
