Does anyone know If I apply for the visa in September and get approved do I need to leave to Thailand within a certain time period or can I fly there 6 months after my visa approval.
Answer summary
You can apply for a Thai visa no more than 3 months before your intended arrival. Once your visa is issued, you can travel to Thailand anytime, even up to 6 months after approval, as long as the visa remains valid.

Yoy aren’t supposed to apply more than 3 months before you intend to arrive but once the visa is issued you can use it whenever you want. Just make sure you indicate an arrival date within the next 1-2 months on the application.
