My wife and I are moving to Thailand on February 3, 2027. What visa should we apply for before our departure ?
Answer summary
The conversation indicates that the couple is planning to apply for a visa before moving to Thailand in February 2027. Recommendations suggest applying for a NON-O visa if they are over 50 years old, which can be extended to a retirement visa once in Thailand. It is emphasized that applying for the visa before departure is essential, with options to apply at the Thai embassy or from Vientiane, Laos if necessary.

Try ringing your local Thai Embassy for facts, then apply for the visa first.

Very easy. 1 get a 3 month non o visa in your country 2 open bank account in Thailand 3 send 800k baht asap 4 wait 2 months , don't take the money out of bank 5 go to immigration and get 1 year extension

Fair enough

It’s definitely much better than living in the west

I would come for 3 months travel north to south and see if it feels right ,

Key factors

1. Understanding culture & Thai time ( nothing gets done quickly which is a good thing and 2pm appointment may not mean 2pm )

2. Visa’s - a bit of a mine field , you just have to research them , there are financial requirements & long term Visa’s require 3 monthly check ins at immigration .

3 . Health Insurance isn’t cheap , but much cheaper than western countries.

4. Transport & licenses

I would apply for a

Single entry Non-O 90 day

Visa from the Thai embassy website in your home country

This is the cheapest and most common Visa for Over 50

However it only allows you to stay 90 days .

If within that time you decide - Thailand is for you - you can look at your options .

But Yes - suitable Visa would be the No.1 priority if you decide you want to stay long term

Attached is the starting point

I'm moving to Thailand in March 2027. I have done all my research, such as type of visa to begin with (90 day type O visa), followed by yearly extensions. I know all the financial requirements, where I want to live, cost of rental properties, and cost of living. It's not hard to do your research. Have a look at the Thai immigration website. Tells you all the visa types and extension requirement etc. It's not difficult.

Depends on your age. If below 50 better forget the idea. Otherwise look for Non Immigrant O Visa. There are other options as well.

You will get stupid answeres & misinformation on here. Atleast 2 people have given you correct info.

My experience. Applied for a Non O from my home country on 5th August 2026. It was issued exact 1 month later. I entered Thailand on 12th August.

Following instructions on portal, I uploaded requested documents, most importantly is 3 months bank Statements of equivalent of atleast 800k baht each in bank accounts (can be a combination of more than 1 each).

I Put in an intended date of arrival , I used the refence of a Thai airways flight that departured daily from my nearest airport & choose a hotel anywhere as I had to put an address.

I was asked for further documents. If this happens you will receive an email, I also checked the status on the portal every few days.

Finally my evisa was approved, exactly 1 month after applying. I arrived at immigration in Bangkok, got stamped in for 90 days & the officer said "welcome to Thailand.

If you follow the portal instructions exactly then there is no issue. You both submit you individual application.

Do not book flights unless they are fully flexible until visa is approved.

You do not need an agent, if done outside of Thailand.

All you need is a bit of time & patience.

Come back here when you arrive for details on opening a bank account etc. Good luck.

Get your non O before you get to Thailand, you will then have a few options.

1.open a bank account(don't use Bangkok bank) using the nonO visa and deposit 800,000bht .

Get your paperwork sorted after 2 months of having the 800,000bht in bank apply for a 12 month extension.

2.Go to an agent with your non O ,they can sort the bank account out and the 12 month visa extension ,also the deposit of the 800,000bht using their money this will take about 2 weeks and cost 15-20,000 bht.

3.Come in on a 30 day exemption got to an agent that can sort the nonO visa and bank account out will take about 2 weeks cost will be 40-50,000 bht

But let me try to clarify my point again. My point is not that asking about experiences is bad.

But if I buy a very, very expensive car and it's delivered in a month, and only then do I ask on Facebook what you can actually do with the car, whether you need some kind of permit to drive the car, how and with what you refuel it, etc. Then this simply has nothing to do with gathering experiences from others; it's simply crazy to have already made a decision without being informed about the fundamental basics.

Dave Owen absolutely agree, i got my non o in the uk and flew to thailand.

First month went to immigration to get a proof of residence for the bank.

Transferred over the 800,000 to my new Thai account.

Went to immigration and a nice member of staff helped and explained the paperwork and job done.

Happy as Larry as they say.

Richard Van Vorst non immigrant 0 took 3 days, flight to Thailand took two, a morning at Surat Thani immigration office, Kasikorn Bank and AIS for a Sim. More recently a day at home collating and photographs and a morning at Immigration again, a visit from the border police and that's it, visa and one year extension done. You're either in it for gain or been a victim of someone out for gain.

Michael Tucker you are making a huge mistake, but some people like to make their lives difficult. Arriving without the correct visa and converting used to be possible a few years ago, it's not anymore. Change your plan and get the 90 day non-O based on retirement or you will regret your decision and pay a lot of money for something you could easily have done in advance.

If you see over 50. Apply for a none o visa before you come on the Thai embassy website of your country. That gives you 3 months. Then when in Thailand you convert the none o visa into a retirement visa which you renew every year and every 3 months you have to register at immigration or online after the first registration of where you are living.

Michael Tucker based on this comment and all the replies, you are not ready to "move to Thailand". You've chosen a date but have no idea on how to "live" in Thailand long-term. Which leads me to ask - have you ever even visited Thailand before?

Changing from a tourist visa to a Non-O is VERY expensive and not that easy. I'm guessing you don't already have a Thai bank account with 800k THB. Without that, you will have to use an agent and that can lead to future problems. Do yourself a favor and do some serious research before you take such a big step.

I completely understand wanting to leave the US and create a better life in Thailand. We left over 5 years ago and it was the thing we could have done. But we did months of research and planning and traveled around Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia) before settling in Thailand.
Lynnette *******
Lynnette *******
Michael Tucker you don't apply IN Thailand, you apply before you arrive. Get the 90 day non-O then you can open a bank account, deposit required funds, and when seasoned extend for 12 months. No point coming as a tourist when you know you actually want to live/retire in Thailand.
Mike ************
Mike ************
Michael Tucker

There is no such thing as a retirement visa.

You need to apply for a Non O or Non OA visa before you go, and then in Thailand open a bank account, transfer 800k each immediately, and then you can apply for a extension of stay based on retirement.

This is NOT a visa, it is an extension of stay that needs to be done every year ,and you need to report every 3 months at the immigration .

thb price its well worth it for a first time entry. They will setup yojr bank account and walk you through that and you will have 15 months here to sort your shit out. Tou need to apply for the 3 month Non O before you leave and allow a couple of months to get it done. Small fee involved and some paperwork. Thai Visa agent in Bangkok will do the rest. You will still need to do some stuff yourself like residency permits etc but you can also get that done for you. Come with a flexible exit airline ticket out so you can change dates. And if you want to leave the country for family holidays etc you will need a mutliple entry permit as well. All the info is out there chat gpt will help also.
Ralph *******
Ralph *******
Michael Tucker If you enter as a visitor then immigration (not customs) may want proof of ongoing travel.

Much better to get the non O (retirement) visa that gives you up to 90 days in Thailand. But, if you want to stay permanently then you have to get a bank account (quickly!) and transfer 800,000 baht each into it (close to $24,000 each). This needs to be in the account for 60 days before you apply for the one year extension of stay. Often it’s difficult to open a bank account. For some it’s easy. Be prepared for a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between banks and immigration.

There are other financial restrictions. Basically, your 800,000 baht is stuck in the account. You can use some of it but it must be replaced months before renewal of you permit to stay. And don’t expect much, if any, interest on it.

Michael Tucker go online to the Thai consulate that covers the area of the USA you live in. For me, it's Los Angeles. Look at visa types and select with you are interested in. As others have told you the O based on retirement or the O-A. Look at the requirements for each and decide which would work better for you. If applying for the O both of you must indepdently must apply and qualify. With the O-A you don't need to open a Thai bank account but you need to buy heath insurance and get an FBI or I think they accept a California state certification for your criminal background check. Not needed with the O application. I have had a house for 20 years in Thailand and I currently am in the US taking care of some business and medical checkups since medical insurance in Thailand doesn't cover pre-existing conditions. I have a one year extension of permission to stay in the Kingdom based on retirement with a re-entry permit that is good until May 22, 2027. I had an O visa that I seasoned ฿800,000 in one of my Thai bank accounts for two months before I applied for the extension of permission to stay in the Kingdom. Since you don't have a Thai bank account, you will need an O or O-a visa, a Thai telephone number linked to your passport, and a certificate of residence for the purpose of opening a Thai bank account from the local immigration office that serves the province you decide to live in and each deposit ฿800,00 in your own, not joint accont for 2 months prior to apply for the extension and three months after it is approved and not let the balance drop below ฿400,000 the other months before you need to show the ฿800K two months before you apply for the next year's extension. Nothing is easy. Good luck.
