TLDR : Answer Summary
The NON immigration visa in Thailand refers to a long-term visa option that allows foreigners to stay in the country without intending to become permanent residents. The most common NON-immigrant visa types include the O and O-A varieties, which are often used for purposes such as marriage to a Thai citizen or retirement. NON visas typically range from 3 months to 5 years, with specific application processes and conditions for extensions.

There are 2 steps 🚶‍♂️ when you apply for a visa. The first step is to get a non O. Then after a short while, you apply for your retirement visa. At least that's what I did.

Non immigration means your not immigrating into the country as a future citizen.

You are simply visiting the country as a guest for the period of time that the visa stipulates. Which ever non immigration visa you have.
Brian *****
You obviously did not read the original question.

It was definitely not about citizenship and my answer was not about citizenship.

I suggest you read the original question

actually it seemed to me that people answering your question here did not understand your question.

There was a lot of rubbish written.

That gave no answer to the question you asked.

it’s ok Brian, I appreciate it

@Brian ****
in that case there would be another visa without “non” for ones pretending to get a citizenship etc

@Anton *************
There isnt a visa specifically to get citizenship for Thailand.

Meaning allows you to do many things legally e.g get a job, have a work permit, Buy a car get local driving license, open bank account and able to stay in country as long as you follow the rule.

Everything online is likely to be out of date. Some government websites say the departments are closed to the public indefinitely because of covid but they are actually open. Even the embassy websites can be years out of date on important information.

The Non Imm O Visa is mostly commonly now issued for 90 days. At 45 down to 30 days you apply for a One Year Extension of Stay.
Joe ***********
A Non Immigrant O Visa is very commonly used for Marriage to a Thai woman. It can also be use for 'Retirement' and can be used for Volunteering (but a bit complicated.

The Non Imm O is not the same as a Non Imm O-A. The O-A can only be obtained by applying at a Thai Embassy or Consulate in your Home Country
Ahkim ********
Crazy that non-O is alsovused for marriage. They nust assume you're not immigrating despite being married?
Joe ***********
@Ahkim *******
Thailand strictly limits any designation to Non Immigrant. The only one not so is PR Permanent Resident.

Joe ***********
@Simon ******
- You can try Hull but most likely yiu you will have to apply online via the Thai London Embassy... a pain in the butt
Steve *********
NON is short for NON IMMIGRANT visa - there are several variations. The most common are O and O-A.

No agents can do for me.
Geoff ********
And how to do this without leaving Thailand at present ?
Geoff ********
Yes. I know this.
Geoff ********
@Steve ********
yes. Can anyone tell me why Non O do not require 40,000 / 400,000 health insurance but non O-A must have to renew one year extension of stay based on retirement ? Very hard and very expensive for retiree over 75.
Nueng ***********
@Geoff *******
Non O is stand for Non immigrant O which mean any other type such as dependence, guardian, retirement, medical ect. The requirement of extension in country are specific to which reflection the purpose of why you are in Thailand. E.g

- dependence type require a valid visa and work permit plus certificate of relationships of who you are depending to. -Guardian type require bank statement, letter from school and your kids visa
Joe ***********
@Geoff *******
There is no rhyme or reason the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs just declared it to be that way
Wayne *******
@Geoff *******
non O, I believe is just a 90day visa.
Geoff ********
Sorry but that is not correct.

Just means a long term visa. Usually specific term of 3 months up to 5 years on arrival.

Stuart Cumming is Dead Wrong

David Broadfoot, again, you are waste of time. You are misguiding people. If you want to obtain a work permit I guess you like to stay in Thailand. Then you will need both a work permit and visa/extension. Then please do not fool people into believing that there is no salary requirement.
Henrik ****
David Broadfoot, you are trying using wordplay to try to win a discussion you know nothing about. As said many times, you are fake news. If you want to stay in Thailand when having a work permit, then visa extension very soon becomes a reality especially when very difficult to travel in and out of the country.

@Stuart ********
thank you
Henrik ****
David Broadfoot, sorry to say, but you have absolutely no clue about the rules on this. The salary requirement is not for the work permit as such but for the visa based on the work permit. This salary requirement is different for people from different parts of the world. To make it really complicated most immigrations will not accept to issue extensions to non-O on marriage if you are not complying with the same salary levels even it in principle shouldn't be related. I think it is better that you stop your fake news here.
Henrik ****
David Broadfoot, you have talked to a law firm, right? But never got to the legislation itself, right? The never-ending story when farang think they know the rules. However, if you like to believe in a blacklist and no whitelist, then please do. I don't give a heck.
Henrik ****
David Broadfoot, have a nice day. You are discussing without purpose.
Henrik ****
David Broadfoot, no, I haven't changed position at all. Read it again. When applying on a white list, the blacklist is not really interesting. The rules are different depending on your country of origin. However, have a nice day.
Henrik ****
David Broadfoot, I really don't care, but I have been investigating this a lot. There are different lists for people from different countries. Some of those lists are blacklist of prohibited work for any foreigner, others are white lists for people from specific regions like Europe. If you think you know better, then be it.
Henrik ****
David Broadfoot, you will find out, when you apply unless you are doing it thru a law firm showing you a blacklist (of their own). Anyway, having a high-grade education, doing IT, being Director, Manager, etc. will qualify for getting a work permit as long as your salary is high enough also (typically 50k per month).
Joe ***********
@Stuart ********
No you are wrong

that’s a very helpful comment. You state that I’m wrong but don’t quantify why.

could we get a job with that visa ?
Bobby ********
@Srey *********
. There's a stack on Non-immigrant visas. Some you can work on, non-O married to a Thai, non-B. But most you can't. And you need a work permit too.
Stuart *********
@Srey *********
you would need a non immigrant B visa to work. Unless you’re married to a Thai.
Heng **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Stuart ********
yes we got NON immigration 1B
Stuart *********
@Srey *********
if you have entered (or are planning to do so) on a non immigrant B visa then you are entitled to apply for a work permit. To get one requires certain conditions for the company you would be working. That said once you have a work permit you can then start working.
Finn ******
@Stuart ********
when I be married to a Thai ,where can I go to get the work permit? Or can I work any kinds of work like restaurant or mechanic or teacher etc?
Stuart *********
@MD ********
if you have a non O visa based on married to a Thai then you can apply for a work permit. There are some restrictions on certain types of work that are reserved only for Thais. The company you’d be working for would need certain criteria to meet.
Henrik ****
@Stuart ********
, there is actually a white list of work allowed for foreigners. Everything else is forbidden.
Stuart *********
@Henrik ***
. There is a list of job titles reserved only for Thais. Everything else is allowed. Even those reserved professions can employ you with a job title like “Manager”, or “Director” or “Consultant”. A grey area for sure, but that’s out of the scope of a visa advisory group.
Henrik ****
@Stuart ********
, you have got this wrong, except yes, some of those jobs you are listing are allowed for foreigners, but you still cannot serve in a bar even your job title is Director...
