Hello! I am moving to Thailand in July with my daughter. She'll be going to college, so they'll do her ED visa after enrollment. I'm trying to figure out what to do in the interim. I'm signed up for a Thai language school, but I want to work, so no ED visa will work. Can't afford the DTV. Is the 90-day visa still a thing? Tourist one won't work, you have to have a return flight booked, right? Any advice would be great!
Summary so far
The user is moving to Thailand with their daughter, who will attend college and obtain an ED visa later. They seek advice on work options since they can't afford a DTV and require information on alternative visa options, such as a tourist visa, and the possibility of teaching English.

You should ask for a non ed guardian visa and change it for a B visa once you find a job

Have you looking into teaching English? It’s my understanding that the school gets you a work visa. I’d recommend chatting with a visa agent or online search for placement agencies.

Yeah, I was going to suggest the TEFL, teaching English, but believe you need a degree, and meet their qualifications.

You can enroll in Muay Tuan or a cooking institute but that does require a serious commitment. I think 5 days a week and approx 5 hrs a day.

I don’t know the exact minimum requirements because I never done it. Just read a little here and there. 😊

Good luck.

And those being total A-holes, why don’t you just leave the group. You obviously are t here to help anybody or answer questions. Just out there being an A$$.

Why don’t you leave your daughter to go to college and have a student life instead of bothering her with your presence 🤯

Sounds like you're better off not coming to Thailand.

I don’t want to sound harsh but have you actually done any form of research in to this? Even teaching English in Thailand requires a degree, without that your are going on a very short expensive holiday at best. In addition to that teacher posts are often asking for a list of prior experience and literally hundreds of applications per post unless you go rural and even then your not going to be funding your daughters education.

How about staying put wherever you’re.

You can get TEFL certified to teach English as a second language. Once you’re qualified, you can apply for a job to teach in Thailand, and from there qualify for a working visa. That is your only option if you want to work in Thailand. You could arrive on a tourist visa if you’ve already secured a remote job in your home country, and then save as much money as possible while doing border runs, but there’s always a chance they may not net you back in on a tourist visa after so many runs.

Athena Williams doing border runs to stay in Thailand? Well, good luck with that. Her kid is going to school in Thailand and I don't think they want the mom to be refused in. Nowadays the regulations are very strict.

WhitePhoenix5046 this doesn’t even make sense if she wants to work not everyone can afford 17k usd at once I don’t have that in the bank but I make a steady paycheck every 2 weeks that would literally pay my rent in Thailand for 6 months

Nikki Williams I don’t think you understand the job situation in Thailand very well. Many jobs are reserved for Thai people. Best chance is opening a business but to get a work permit you must employ 4 Thai people, that will cost a decent amount of money and not guarantee any profits ever.

The DTV is the CHEAP Visa lol. I have a 10 year privilege visa that cost $35k USD. Living in Thailand only seems cheap to those who don’t know what it takes - visas are the biggest hurdle.

You literally would also have a very hard time living in Thailand, your steady paycheck means nothing here as you likely couldn’t work that job in Thailand. Are y’all serious? Have you done any research on the subject? lol

OP
WhitePhoenix5046 can’t afford it yet, I’ll be fine once the house sells 😂 my mom is staying to wrap it all up, but we’re going ahead to get my daughter settled in for college and to get a place and such.

Ashley Snyder 90 days visa applies to those who are 50 or older, Retirement visa.

Ashley Snyder Well you get 30 days visa free plus one 30 day extension. Can’t apply for DTV from inside Thailand. If you’re over 50 you could do non o and retirement but that requires more than the DTV and more involved process. The odds of you finding work are unlikely unless you speak Thai or have a desirable degree. You would need to find a company that hired you to try and help you with a visa/work permit. You should definitely do a bit more research on what is realistic…

What do you mean when you say you want to work? The only visa that would be available to you for working in Thailand would be a Non-B work visa.

But you mention the DTV, so are you going to be working remotely?

@Brandon ***********
I can do either. I’ve taught before, so I have placement company’s I can reach out to. I had initially been planning to work remotely, but the DTV requires capital I don’t yet have. I don’t have a return flight, so tourist visa won’t work. I’m wracking my brain trying to figure out how to get this done.
