I am coming for my annual SEA vacation in November. I was going to stay in Thailand for 45 days then leave for 30 and come again for 45 days. Now that the 60 day visa seems sure to be gone by November I was looking for a different visa that would be suitable. Is there any visa that would allow a tourist to stay for 4 months in Thailand without leaving that I can apply for here in the USA before coming? If not what would be my best option and allow me to leave Thailand for the shortest amount of time during the four months?
Answer summary
The user is seeking advice on a visa that would permit a 4-month stay in Thailand without leaving, amid uncertainty about changing visa rules. Comments suggest that the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) is a suitable option, allowing multiple entries and 60-day stays for each entry. There are discussions about the potential reevaluation of visa policies, but as of now, the METV and Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) remain valid options. Users emphasize the distinction between visa-exempt entries and tourist visas, indicating that current regulations should still accommodate the user's travel plans.

Tu be safe, ask for a METV visa. Allows you to enter during 3 months (after emission of eVisa) Thailand without restrictions and get 60 days of stay each time.

In my personal understanding, the 60 day SETV is not changing, the METV with its 60 day stays is not changing, what is being looked at to change is 60 day visa exempt stays. If truly doing tourism, either of the non-changing visa options would match. As annual visits, there are options spanning more than a year that might be looked at as well.

What if he’s not truly “doing tourism” but popping over to see his missus/girlfriend and kid/s ?

That is where my last sentence comes in. I was trying to address the fact that Visa has not been proposed to change, only visa exempt. This is I believe an error in the original question.

The METV is suitable.

I don’t understand your reference to four months, though. You talk of two stays of 45 days, which is only three months.

I don't know why people keep calling it a 60 day visa it's not a visa it's the amount of time your allowed to stay in country your passport is given from Thailand

OP
David Easson That's so weird on my last entry they gave me for 60 days it literally says Visa on the stamp in two places so I kind of thought it was a visa, my bad

That's an entry stamp. That is your permission to stay. It is not a visa. A visa is something you apply for and pay for from a Thai embassy. This was not applied for, it was not paid for, and it is not from a Thai embassy.

Michael Dawson Thailand to reevaluate all visas dues to gun seizures +5 Following the discovery of military-grade weapons and explosives in Pattaya, Thai authorities are actively reviewing visa policies, specifically considering reducing the 60-day visa-free stay to 30 days. The suspect, a Chinese national, was linked to this cache, prompting security concerns about foreign nationals.Key PointsVisa-Free Reduction: Thailand is considering slashing the current 60-day visa-free stay to 30 days, which would affect tourists from 93 countries.Trigger Event: The review was triggered by the arrest of a foreign national in Pattaya in May 2026, who was found with a large cache of war weapons, notes.Strict Security Measures: Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul previously ordered enhanced screening at all borders to prevent misuse of tourist status for crimes, including the use of biometrics.Visa Type Focus: While the initial, and likely inaccurate, reports suggested 60-day, it was reported the suspect actually had a Thailand Elite Visa, leading to a broader review of long-term visas.Targeted Nationalities: While the initial incident involved a Chinese national, authorities are analyzing the overall presence of foreigners and their purposes in the country, says.Current StatusThe 60-day visa-free policy is still under review and has not yet been reduced to 30 days. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is evaluating the situation. The government is under pressure from social media to tighten visa rules,

The 60 day tourist visa isn't changing, if you need more than 1entry just apply for the multiple entry tourist visa

Anthony van der Craats wrong. Visa exemption and SETV/METV ar two/three different things.

If someone enter under the visa exemption he/she doesn't get a visa.

Anthony van der Craats Incorrect. The Single entry tourist visa has always been 60 days. The change that is proposed is to the 60 days visa exempt entry, reducing it to 30 days. The tourist visa and visa exemption are two totally different animals

A multiple entry tourist visa would cover you. Every entry during the validity of the visa gets you stamped in for 60 days

and actually that is more or less the only (tourist) visa. The entry under visa exemption is not a visa.

Is there a minimum amount of time to leave then come back into thailand? Could I leave for a weekend then come back again without raising eyebrows?

Richard Stine the METV comes with a multi re-entry permit included. This visa is especially designed for multiple exits, visits of other SEA countries and gurantees re-entering Thailand anytime during its 6-months visa validity. If you stay abroad longer or shorter, it doesn't matter. On each entry within the visa validity period you will get stamped in for 60 days. There won't be any raised eyebrows, at least not for what you are planning
