Hello, after researching and visiting 2 different bank's, I'm confused. I want to apply for a non O retirement visa but need a bank account to put my 800k into. However, bank won't let me open one without a non o visa with at least 60 days valid. What am I missing, please?🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is confused about the process of opening a bank account in Thailand to deposit the required 800,000 Baht for a Non O retirement visa. They are being told by banks that they need a Non O visa valid for at least 60 days to open an account, which raises questions about the application process for the visa itself. Suggestions from comments include applying for the visa at a Thai embassy, trying different banks, or possibly getting assistance from a visa agency.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Be aware there is a error in the start of the article ( and several other copy - paste media with the same article )

A Thai Bankaccount has never been a requirement to get DTV, on the contrary it has been one of the big advantage over other visa, that you could get DTV as long as you could show 500.000 Baht equivalent in any bank anywhere in the world.

It has never been the intention that DTV visaholders should be in need of a Thai bankaccount.

Get an agent to assist and it'll all get done in under a day.

Some immigration offices will allow you to change a tourist or exempt to an O visa which is valid for 3 months. As soon as you've done this you should be able to open a bank account, deposit your funds, when seasoned go back to immigration for 1 year extension based on retirement.

@Sharon ******
never heard of that.

@Sharon ******
in order to change to an O visa from tourist or exempt u need to show the immigration your thai bank acct

@Jesper ******
actually opening a bank account is now the most difficult part of the process, you are correct i think I did show funds before converting to an O, long time ago

You're missing the relevant visa You need to get that first from outside Thailand. Its a non O visa which gives you 3 months Time enough to open a bank account season funds and then apply for a 1 year "extension based on retirement" Cost 1900 thb

My understanding is, don’t be put off by refusal, try different banks of the same name, banks are not inter related to each other. keep trying as some banks are more accommodating than others. Preferably in your province or area because banks don’t recognise one another, the bank where you open an account will be your bank

Go see visa agency they will help

You have missed the bus....banks doesn't allow tourist to opened bank acct anymore since last year those who did it are lucky ether with the help of agent or not...it seems the only route is to apply a non O outside of thailand and come into thailand with that and open a bank acct

I’ll be in the same position in a few months.

A friend went into BangkokBank recently & they told her they would open one with a TM30 & obvs all your I.D.s

But it seems to be a fluid response dep on what day it is & if the person you ask CBA. 🤷‍♂️ ……good luck.

@Paul ******
ta, what's a TM 30?
Paul *******
@Ando *********
you get it from from wherever you are staying. It’s like a rental agreement & therefore shows ‘intent to stay’ in the country.

So mine should show I’ve paid for a 12month rental.

@Paul ******
that's not what TM30 is at all. It doesn't indicate anything about your intent to stay. It's a legal requirement of property owners any times a foreigner spends the night. It's a residence certificate from immigration that most banks want. A TM30 doesn't really mean anything. They don't even require approval, it's just a database.

@Paul ******
Different situations get different responses from different banks. If your gf is Thai that would have changed the situation from a single tourist

@Brandon ***********
oh great 🤦‍♂️….. but BkkBank told my gf that would suffice.

So what about the residence certificate Graham mentioned.
Graham ******
@Paul ******
You take your TM30 copy to Immigration and get a residence certificate as this is what banks normally require when opening a bank account

thanks 👍

Visas are supposed to be obtained from embassies. That's what you are missing. So you need to go to a Thai embassy, apply for the visa (no Thai bank account required), and then use that visa to open a Thai bank account. Why would they give a bank account to a tourist?

I'm in Thailand and my understanding is I have to be in my home country to apply via an embassy. Also both bank workers told me it only changed a few months ago that you can no longer open an account with tourist visa. Thanks for comment.
Brandon ************
@Ando *********
That's not the case at all. You can check the embassy website, if they have restrictions they will say it on the website. There are some embassies that only allow residents/citizens of that country to apply, but this is not the case in any of the Thai embassies in SE Asia.

Your understanding is not correct as many foreigners get Visas from the Embassies in the countries neighbouring Thailand where they are not residents
