Hi, after spending 2 months in Thailand, December and January,I tried to get a bank account for my up coming attempt on getting a marriage visa, but 2 months later no bank account, every where I went big city's or small towns they all said no you need a visa, I even showed them the official Thai embassy website saying you need a bank account before you can get a visa and there just looked at me and said no visa no bank, anyway I have heard you can use a HSBC bank account to get a visa, is this true or just more running around catching your tail, thanks sorry if it's a bit long winded but really need advice,

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster (OP) is having difficulty opening a bank account in Thailand due to not having a visa, which is typically required for setting up a bank account. Various comments suggest that tourists cannot usually obtain a bank account, and that it is advisable to apply for a NON-O visa outside of Thailand, which would later allow for a bank account setup. Some commenters mention the use of agents to facilitate the account opening process, while others clarify that certain banks may consider applications based on various circumstances, such as having a TM30 form or connections to foreign banking. Ultimately, HSBC cannot be used for this purpose as they do not offer retail accounts in Thailand. The community emphasizes the need for a visa to open a bank account and the complexities surrounding marriage visa applications.

Go to small branch with your paper and let one person know that you will pay insurance for one year and see

Before I left Chiang Mai the last visit I hired Siam Legal to take care of my retirement visa while I was back in the states. Within a few months I received my visa after submitting several documents visa email. Once I arrived in Chiang Mai to live permanently we met at a Thai bank with the proper documents and opened an account after transferring 800,000 THB. On April 17th I will go to the bank and update my bank book and obtain a statement for the last 2 months proof of 800,000 THB, then on April 18th the visa agent will meet me at the immigration office to extend my visa for a year, total of 15 months.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Can you open a bank account on a 60 day tourist visa
Brandon ************
David ********
Marry first maybe.
Paul *******
I was told Bangkok Bank will open an account with a TM30.

Jim *******
No. Any bank would ask for a visa other than 60 days stay stamp.
Nicholas ******
Use an agent

I got a bank account w/o a visa (on my passport waiver while waiting for my visa). You need to go to a branch that does a lot of business with foreigners. So look for branches in tourist and expat hotspots and go during the week when they're not that busy.

Branches who do not have many foreigners walking in are simply not interested in dealing with the hassle that comes with foreigners.

Must have visa first so you can open bank account
Ian **********
You do not need a Thai bank account if you apply for a non O visa, based on visiting your Thai wife, outside of Thailand. When you have a non O visa you can open a Thai bank account. The 400k baht must be in your Thai bank for 2 months before you can apply for a 12 month extension based on marriage. As your non O visa lasts for 90 days there is time for this but don't hang about. Ifyou apply for a non O visa while in Thailand then you do need a bank account. This is where your confusion is. HSBC account cannot be used as it is a foreign account. HSBC only operate commercially in Thailand. There is no retail banking.
Jim *******
@Ian *********
That is what I was saying about Bangkok Bank in Osaka. I can open an account with them but no retail banking (ATM card, Internet), only for commercial purposes, between companies.
Steve *********
Get a non-o visa on line. 90 days. Get here then you need a letter from

Immigration , then you can get bank account. Once you have this get a 12 money extension ( you need
*****
0 bhat in account ). Then you have time to sort marriage visa (the criteria changes often but this worked for me Dec 24)
Paul *******
@Steve ********
You state that you need a letter from immigration

Can you expand more and give further details relating to immigration letter
Steve *********
@Paul ******
this was in roi-et and it had changed from a few months earlier. The bank said we need letter from immigration , which was quite easy , they done it whilst I waited my Thai gf sorted it all out , This may not be case elsewhere, and it changes often
Wayne ********
@Steve ********
I believe he can get the 90 day non-O visa based on being married to a Thai and when he files for his first extension, he will only need 400K baht in Thai bank account

@Wayne *******
thanks for that

Edit: wrong information it changed recently. Sorry.

Road trip to savannakhet laos and get the 3 month Non-O and don’t need to show income to get it. You need to be quick when they open slots for online appointment. Pretty easy process still once you have an appointment. Come back to Thailand and open a bank account.
Brandon ************
@Cory *********
You do need to show a bank balance now that Laos is on e-visa. But it doesn't have to be a Thai bank account.
Cory **********
@Brandon ***********
oh wow sorry you are correct. Do you know when that changed? It has to be recent?

January 1st when they changed to e-visa.

12-15k in Pattaya now. Don't even bother looking Bangkok as there aren't any agents that will only open a bank account, they want you to be purchasing a whole package first.
Andreas *********
@จอน *******
yeah it was possible on a tourist visa and even on a visa-exempt until February this year. Not that easy any more, not even with an agent unless you buy there complete service

not anymore. They closed that loophole in February

lol. That didn't take them long.

Tourists cannot get a bank account. If you needed a visa, you should have applied from your Thai embassy before you traveled to Thailand.

You will need to pay an agent to get a bank account, or you will need to go outside of Thailand and apply for the visa at a Thai embassy through the evisa system.

You can only apply in Thailand with a THAI Bank account in your name only. At an embassy you should be able to use any bank account.

Currently bank accounts are running 12-15k baht if you use an agent.
Len *****
@Brandon ***********
no you need twelve months proof of residence. I have been rejected four times and am now using an agent.
Brandon ************
@Len ****
Every bank branch has their own requirements. You should be able to find one that will open a bank account if you have a non-O visa though.
Scott *********
@Brandon ***********
tourists can get bank accounts, I did it on a visa exemption. I was told you just need a stamp which is longer than the standard visa exemption stamp, so I just got the 30 day extension and applied immediately. When leaving Thailand I was asked by immigration why I had not used any of my 30day extension, I just told them the truth. No agent necessary.
@Paul *******
if you have left Thailand already the easiest thing to do is apply for the 90day Non-O visa in your home country using funds in you home country bank accounts. Then when you return to Thailand on your non-o visa get a Thai account immediately and transfer necessary funds into it. Again, no agents necessary.
Scott *********
Yes it was a few months ago.

Carol ************
@Brandon ***********
hi Brandon so would you say on balance it's better to apply for the retirement visa in your own country(UK) -then funds can remain in UK bank account?
Brandon ************
@Carol ***********
It's only the Non-OA that lets you keep your money in your home country. And that visa has a lot of requirements like medical check, criminal history check, high mandatory insurance, etc. And you'll have to go back to your home country at least every 2 years to get a new one for it to make any sense to want a non-OA.

Most people want the non-O visa. So apply for the non-O visa before you leave for Thailand, and that will give you 90 days permission to stay in Thailand. That means you have about 1 month to open your bank account and transfer your money because you'll need to show the money was in your account for 2 full months at the time you apply for your extension.
Carol ************
@Brandon ***********
Thank you for your advice-we are thinking on our next trip to Thailand we may just stay for 3 or 4 months on this occasion -would we get a non -0 for that length of time or is it for just people who are applying for retirement at that time?
John **********
@Carol ***********
you can apply for a Non-O visa based on having money in a bank outside Thailand if you apply outside Thailand but to get a 12 month extension of stay you need funds in a Thai bank for 2 months before applying for that extension
