TLDR : Answer Summary
When arriving in Thailand without a return ticket, it's crucial to prepare for immigration by understanding that the airline may require proof of onward travel to allow boarding. Since you are arriving without a visa, it's advisable to check with your air carrier regarding their specific rules on return tickets, as they might refuse boarding if you cannot demonstrate your exit plans from Thailand.

Okay, I think the O/P understands that it is far more likely the AIR CARRIER will ask for proof of onward travel when he is flying here without a valid visa for thailand in his passport (entering visa exempt).

Good luck to the O/P, CHECK with your air carrier

ONE WARNING to people, DO NOT post links to sites that offer FAKE onward travel. I will mute and/or boot people who do.

It is the airline that you need to worry about, they may refuse you boarding if you do not have a flight out of Thailand within your permitted to stay time, if you do not purchase a visa before you come.

Correct you can arrive with a visa exempt entry, but that is when your airline MAY refuse you boarding if you do not have a flight out of Thailand

you dont have to but if you do it will be longer and avoid the return flight issue. You can buy one from your local Thai embassy probrably online. Visa exemption is only an option.
