Hello, how important is it to have a two way ticket? I want to book a one way from Amsterdam to Bangkok. If I buy a ticket to get out, will a Bangkok - Kuala Lumpur be fine as well? Thanks in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
When traveling to Thailand, having a two-way ticket is not strictly necessary, but it often depends on the airline and your method of entry. Many travelers have reported that airlines frequently require proof of an onward ticket, especially if entering on a visa-exempt basis or a tourist visa. A ticket out of Thailand to any destination (like Kuala Lumpur) is generally accepted, and on some occasions, travelers have been able to board flights with a one-way ticket by signing an indemnity form or by showing cash to buy an onward ticket if needed. Given the varied experiences of travelers, it’s best to secure an onward ticket to avoid potential boarding issues.

i have house in Amsterdam and fly to Thailand about every month. I always have a ticket out or return. But, in 10 YEARS no one has ever asked me for anything.

The term immigration uses is "Departure Ticket." So yes, your departure ticket will work. There's even signage at immigration in Suvarnabhumi that says that.

As you can see, everyone has different experiences. I have been asked a couple times by the airline, and a couple times by Thai immigration. So, always best to have one, even if you cancel it later. Also, on a related note, have some cash on you when you arrive, in case you are asked.

Also, it doesn't have to be a 2 way ticket. It can be 2 one way tickets.

Normally it's the airline that won't let you board without a return ticket.

I had China airways going from bkk to Seoul ask me for an onward ticket. Had to show her enough cash to buy a ticket without one.

my god that’s terrible 😞. In Europe they don’t care

@J*
there are plenty of reports of European airlines wanting this for people without a visa.

strange i commute from Europe to Thailand monthly for many years never been asked nor any of colleagues. So I doubt very much this case. Certainly from the USA

I’ve always traveled to Thailand on a one-way ticket and have never been asked to show an onward or return ticket by an airline or anyone else. If you’re asked by your airline, you frequently can avoid the problem by signing an indemnity form in which you agree to hold the airline harmless against any costs they might incur to take you back if you get turned back at the border. Only once in many years of traveling did I ever have to buy an onward ticket, which was for a trip to Vanuatu. I just bought it at the airport. It’s stupid. I would have stayed longer and spent more money there, but I had a ticket to leave. So I left.

Yea everyone - can we please get it straight? IF FLYING FROM THE US proof of onward travel is needed by the airline before boarding. I’ve flown in from Europe and Persian Gulf countries approx 30 times and have never been asked about an onward ticket.

If you were never asked when flying from Europe, it just means you were lucky.

I fly from the US. Never needed proof of onward travel.

OK, so proof of onward travel is asked for even less frequently than I thought. Thanks! 😊

you should be nicer to people who give you accurate and useful information that is directly responsive to your inquiry. 😂

depends on your visa. If you are entering on a VISA exempt for instance your originating airline might not let you board the flight. Best get a cheap onward travel ticket

It depends on how you plan on entering Thailand. If you will be entering Thailand using visa exempt (no visa) or with a tourist visa, your airline will probably require you to show a ticket out of Thailand within the number of days you will be stamped in for, or they will not let you board your flight. Immigration can ask to see your ticket out as well, but it's rare for them to ask.

A ticket to anywhere out of Thailand will be fine, it doesn't have to be a return to your home country.

I will get a TR60. I will also book a ticket from BKK to KL I think it’s fine. Thank you so much Brandon.
