What should I know when applying for the DTV visa in Thailand after returning from a trip?

Just some information/experience I would like to share at Phuket airport and for those still things about whether or not to apply for the DTV..

I was thinking about applying for a DTV soft power Muay Thai, but was not to sure yet (or maybe a little to lazy), then this happened today:

My son and I came back to Phuket today, by air, after spending a week on Bali.

I made the mistake of not booking an exit ticket (which I normally would, but they never asked before). This time they did ask and I told them honestly that I did not have one, because my daughter (12) is coming back on the 29th of march and we want to make a choice as a family as where to go next.

Stupid I know 🤦🏽‍♀️

I told them I would book an exit ticket right on the spot if that is really needed, but we got taken for interrogation anyway 😖

First time for everything.

I answered their questions as honestly as I could, also when they asked if we would come back after leaving again and I told them we might be.

So they asked what we do here in Thailand and I let them know we do some diving and Muay Thai.

Then they smiled and asked me to come in the office, she told me I should apply for the DTV soft power and made me take a picture of the flyer in their office.

Then she asked me to follow her to the booth and told me they will grant us the 60 day exemption, but urged me to apple for the DTV.

It will be more difficult for those travelling on visa exemptions and extensions and told me she couldn’t guarantee they wil let us enter, because of the multiple entries on exemptions and the extensions 🥺

TLDR : Answer Summary
A traveler shares their experience at Phuket airport regarding visa regulations and the DTV soft power visa application. After returning from Bali without an exit ticket, they were questioned by immigration but ultimately received a 60-day exemption. The immigration officer recommended applying for the DTV visa due to stricter enforcement against visa exemptions, highlighting that those who engage in activities like Muay Thai are encouraged to pursue the DTV for better long-term residency options.

"It will be more difficult for those travelling on visa exemptions" No, not for those really traveling, but for those LIVING on visa exemptions.

Welcome to the new Thai-Tax system humans. They need the money. Thailand is in a desperate situations. The DTV does help the economy unfortunately it is no longer -FREE-Thailand (Phra-Tha-Thai = of course).

I think that you handled yourself very well. As long as we remember to show respect and cooperate, it is a pleasure to work with immigration.

That is my experience at least☺️

At least they pointed you in direction of the DTV which is good news. As others have said they are clamping down on Visa Exempt etc. You even have tourist chiefs asking for visa exempt ot be reduced to 30 days from the 60 that was only implemented quite recently

yes I was very thankful for their kindness, because I’ve also heard different stories 🙏🏽

Anonymous participant As someone else mentioned your politeness and approach to them will have helped a lot. I have worked with Thais for over 25 years and sometimes I felt like throwing chairs around but it would have got me nowhere. There is a good book about how Thais lead. The sub-title is "Face as social capital".

that sounds quite interesting. I’ll look it up. Thank you 🙏🏽

Anonymous participant Book called "The way Thais lead" and author is Larry S Persons. Much better than the ones titles "How to work with Thais" etc.

Anonymous participant I just reread the opening Chapter 1 as I have not read it for at least 6 years. The Face story with MP etc is excellent. Seen similar when someone important visits a factory or even when you attend the funeral of a colleagues family member. The office wreath had to be second largest after the immediate family.

Anonymous participant: It is. The whole Wai thing is strange, too. I was once told that if you do not know it perfectly, never attempt it. A pals wife had a student job in a restaurant in a very famous hotel. A certain Hollywood actor often stayed. All the staff would line up and Wai him when he entered. He Wai's back - they thought he was an idiot for Wai'ing service staff. Then you get blokes going into girly bars and Waiing bar girls - do not even go there!!!!

From this I can tell that the person was polite and courteous to the Immigration officer as it should be. It's the ones that become hot headed and rude that get turned away.

Had you had many previous extensions and visa on arrival prior to this ?

we came twice on the 60 day exemption and extended once, so a total of 5 months, so this would be our third 60 day exemption and then I was planning on seeing what I need to do for the DTV

Anonymous participant sounds like you were lucky with the immigration officer. I wouldn't recommend trying another visa exempt entry

Anonymous participant I'm not sure if they let you know the you have to apply for the DTV while in another country. You can't apply while in Thailand. The process is easy. Just have proof of 500,000 baht in a bank for at least 3 months and proof of monthly income.

Yes, many people who have been abusing exemptions are now being interviewed and sometimes denied or warned to obtain the correct visa. The systems they plan to implement in the coming months (TM6, tourist taxes, potential ETA) will make it even more difficult. Thailand wants to control the flow of visitors/residents, and the DTV was not only designed to attract money but also to give a chance to people like you who participate in activities such as Muay Thai.

Anonymous participant 548 I completely understand what you’re saying. We however haven’t been here that long and I was planning on seeing what I need to do for the DTV before the 60 days end

Anonymous participant Yes, I think there was too much abuse (much more than what you've done), and now they are being very strict with random people, which is unfortunate. As I said, you genuinely qualify for a DTV, so I believe the officer who took the final decision understood that and chose not to be too harsh.

Anonymous participant 548 I agree, that’s why I wanted to see if I can apply for the DTV soft power. All three of us train Muay Thai, so it would be a great opportunity if I could get granted such a visa and get my kids on the dependent visa 🙏🏽
