TLDR : Answer Summary
The user reports being denied a visa extension at the Ranong immigration office, advised to seek assistance from the American Embassy. Several comments discuss the challenges of obtaining letters from the embassy, the importance of being able to fly home, and the current travel advisory against international travel due to the coronavirus. The situation reflects the complexities faced by expats living in Thailand during these uncertain times.

Immigration isn't accepting that letter.

We have an appointment tomorrow morning at the US Embassy in Bangkok. Does anyone know if they’re still going to be open?

If you can show the Thai government that you're trying to leave, maybe they would grant you the extension.

if you have an appointment and they cancel it, you should get an email. Check out the website too

It's a really unfortunate situation, and it's unfortunate to read some of the responses that I have read from people saying 'just fly home.' While I am a US citizen, I have been living abroad in different places for the past 10 years. USA does not equal home. I'm currently on a 30-day tourist visa, which I've already extended one time to remain with my husband in Bangkok. My UK husband is in Thailand on a non-immigrant B visa. The USA has issued a travel advisory to avoid international travel. The travel advisory specifically says that US citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel. I am healthy; why would I risk the chance of catching the virus, especially to travel back to the USA, where I do not have any sort of life or any type of insurance that covers treatment in the USA? Adding the fact that I see how much trouble the USA is in with this coronavirus; cases are ever expanding, the USA has no plan, and asking more people to come back to a country that is massively struggling with what they are dealing with is insane (and don't even get me started with Trump), along with risking being split apart from your husband during this situation. It's utter madness. What are we supposed to do?

I heard that people got emails stating that all appointments were canceled. Did you get that email OR are you doing an appointment for passport services?

CALL then and ask right now; 02 205 4000

Check the US Embassy website in Bangkok OR the United States Department of State; if it's closed, there would be an announcement.

Flights to the land of the free still operating so embassy wont issue letter stating otherwise simples really !!!!!

No embassy wants to write the letter it’s a technicality thst breeches diplomatic protocol by interfering with essentially a travel ban ...

Simply put by thousands now. If U can fly home. NO LETTER. Why is this still being asked???? Not you. LOL

@Moaya *********
there is no travel ban at present

The US consulate issued a b/s bogus looking letter that most immigration offices turned away and denied extensions even WITH that letter.

They seem to know it was a b/s letter and are "reviewing the situation

If flights are still available to the USA, you won’t be able to get any extra extensions.
