What should I do after my DTV freelance contract ends: find a new employer, apply for a retirement visa, or let my DTV run its course?

Hi there,

I am on a DTV freelance and just finished my contract with my exclusive employer. I am still 3 years on my DTV. What should I do ? Find another employer , or change my DTV to another visa like retirement as I just turned 50 or I do not say anything and let my 5 years run to its terms ? Thanks for your advice.
Answer summary
The post discusses options for an expat whose DTV freelance contract has concluded, with three main choices: finding a new employer, switching to a retirement visa due to recent eligibility at 50 years old, or allowing the DTV visa to expire without taking any action. Comments suggest that maintaining the DTV visa is valid for the full term without the need for further work documentation, especially if staying within 180-day re-entry limits. Therefore, options like keeping the DTV or transitioning to a retirement visa are viable, depending on the individual's work intentions and desire to remain in Thailand.

There is currently no obligation to continue working remotely or continue attending a soft power course with this visa. It is valid for 5 years as a multi entry tourist visa. The only problem you have is you would be unable to extend in-country so the maximum stay will be limited to 180 days on each entry.

That is my intention, thanks. I will keep my DTV and exit anyway before the 180 days mark. I will let the visa run until its term.

Just say nothing , you have a 5 year multi entry visa.

The visa is valid for 5 years so technically you don't need to do anything. But if you want to extend a stay from within thailand you need to re-provide proof of work in which case it could cause problems. If you leave and re-enter every 180 days, it should be fine.

If you want to stay year around and not want to work anymore, changing to non-o retirement is the best option.

If you still want to work every now and then or are not always in Thailand at the moment non-o needs extension, just keep DTV.

The only time they're really checking up is if you extend in country. You could just let this DTV run as is. If you get another employer, you'll have their documentation. If you move to retirement, strictly speaking, you cannot work remotely. In practise, as long as you're not stepping on toes, money is not coming into Thailand, not taking Thai business or clients, it's a grey area according to a lawyer I spoke to on behalf of a friend. She was very law-ish, would not make any definitive statement, but talked about intent and usual practise.

DelightfulHummingbird3635 Coming to retirement, I think the route now is to enter on a 90-day "O" for retirement. Open a bank account on that visa. Seed the money for two months and then apply for the 12-month extension. That seems to be the do-it-yourself route without any agent and the agent not depositing the money. I don't know if that's still available, the depositing of the money. For the actual 12-month extension, I've heard agents charge 4,000 to 7,000 baht for that, doing the paperwork and going with you to the immigration office. Do it yourself. Probably takes half a day, depending on the immigration office.

DelightfulHummingbird3635 the case in question of my pal is that he's basically retired, but he still does consultancy work in his old industry. Most of the work would be flying down to attend meetings in Singapore. The case we were talking about was if he had to take phone calls here in Thailand and then maybe produce a report and send it off. None of this work would be for Thai clients. He would have no Thai clients or companies. The companies he would consult to are biotech and large pharma. The DTV would work for him. He could probably get an LTR if he wanted one. He wants to keep his own bank, UOB Singapore, which has branches here now, and he wants to buy a house hence, retirement is easier.

I was told contact your embassy and update your visa. I sensed he didn’t really know just wanted to see evidence of work, payslips or a website.

If you suffer from anxiety change to retirement visa. Do nothing if you don't 👍
