Hi everyone! I’m 45 years old and exploring options for living long-term in Thailand, preferably in the Bangkok area.

I currently have approximately $3,500 USD in guaranteed monthly income and around $50,000 USD in savings.

I’m trying to figure out what visa options might be available to someone my age since I don’t yet qualify for the traditional retirement visa at 50.

For those who have been in a similar situation, what visa would you recommend looking into? I’m particularly interested in options that would allow me to stay long-term without constantly leaving the country.

I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences, visa costs, financial requirements, and any challenges you’ve encountered.

Thanks in advance for any advice or recommendations!
Answer summary
The post discusses a 45-year-old individual seeking long-term visa options to stay in Thailand, particularly around Bangkok, with a monthly income of $3,500 and savings of $50,000. Since they don't qualify for the retirement visa until age 50, they are exploring alternatives. Commenters suggest several options including the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV), Elite Visa, and the potential for a Non-O visa upon turning 50. Recommendations highlight the importance of securing additional savings and the possibility of obtaining these visas through various means, emphasizing the necessity of meeting specific financial conditions.

Contact Massive Thai visa in Bangkok and they can advise you professionally. I don’t know the exact cost except for retirement visa.

Personally don’t think 50K emergency fund is enough. Specially if you fall in love there. A big suction sound can follow.

My reccomendation is DTV visa. Put 20k in a saving account if you already havent done so. wait 3 months (if you have this already skip this step) apply for culture or remote work. You need to show proof you work remotely. Apply for DTV visa. you get to stay in thailand for 180 days then extend 180 days for 1 full year. Then do a border run with a legit company who will take ur across border for 1 day come back and do the 180 days plus extension for 1 more year. so basically in 2 years of living in thailand you will hhave done 1 single border run. Do this till ur 50 then apply for retirement visa.

DTV is one option...can you apply for it ? Be careful it has some limitation and they are quite strictly now

To add on the DTV side: each entry gives you 180 days and you can extend once in country for another 180, so in practice it's roughly one trip out per year. If your income comes from remote work or your own business abroad, it's usually the cheapest long-term option until you can switch to retirement at 50.

If your income is based outside Thailand and ongoing , you might be eligible for a DTV based on a “ workcation “

Minimum of 500,000 Thai baht equivalent in a home bank in your name for at least 3 months

And

• Remote Employees: Provide an employment contract, HR letter confirming remote status and salary, recent pay slips, and the employer's business registration.

• Freelancers / Contractors: Submit a professional portfolio, client contracts, invoices, and bank statements proving overseas income.

• Digital Business Owners: Provide business incorporation papers, tax returns, and a cover letter detailing the remote business model.

Ant W Tailor I think you missed "interested in options that would allow me to stay long-term without constantly leaving the country." in OP.

DTV does not offer that.

Not many options for someone your age to live in Thailand without having to leave regularly. You could look at a 5 year Thai Privilege visa which would get you to 50 and then you can switch to a retirement visa
