What should I do after experiencing severe complications following medical treatment in Thailand?

EDIT. I appreciate the comments regarding why didnt I do this or that hindsight eh?

Hello Admin please approve.

This is a real story, which I hope will benefit others. After a concussion in England, I returned to Pattaya in September and went to a well known hospital in North Pattaya whose HQ is in Bangkok. I saw a neurologist who was recommended by a number of people on Facebook. He was 45 minutes late looking dishevelled, not at all like a doctor. I went alone and after a hurried consultation, he somehow decided I needed injections in my neck and back to deal with concussion. Before he explained what he was going to do or give me the opportunity to ask questions, he started to give me injections in neck and back, every one went in 2.5cm. The pain from every injections was indescribable but by the time he had finished he had given me 31 trigger point Injections. Halfway through, he got me to sign a piece of paper giving authorisation I guess. I don't speak Thai and him and his nurse didn't talk to me much about the injections or talk about aftercare. This was 13 weeks ago. I left the hospital in great pain and since then I have been back to that hospital 3 times to see him, 2 times to see another neurologist, 2 times to see a gastroenterologist and once to see a physiotherapist. They gave me a free MRI on my neck and brain because i complained that the injections affected me badly. They are all covering up for the initial guy who gave me the injections. I have massive shaking in my arms legs and feet, pain in my neck, back and shoulders. I have lost sense of feeling in my arms, I cannot walk because my legs hurt so much. I have lost every muscle in my body, legs arms, the lot and have lost 12kg in weight. I feel sick all the time and have diarrhoea 20 times a day on average. My kidneys have started playing up and I am peeing brown blood urine. My diabetis is now totally out pf control as are the problems with my pancreas and blood pressure. I have been to 2 other hospitals, both saying they could not help, after I paid for treatment. Because of my age and previous history I could not get insurance so I self pay. Despite spending a fortune on treatment, the hospital are denying liability, it feels like I am terminally ill and I am gutted. Had I know this would be the outcome I would not have gone anywhere near that hospital and would urge anyone reading this to avoid this hospital unless essential. So my message is:

1 Don't use this hospital for any treatment

2 If you decide to use them always go with someone

3 Do not agree to any treatment on the day at any hospital

4 If you do have treatment there or anywhere, do research on the doctor, what treatment he is going to do and the side effects of any proposed medicines or injections to be used

5 Do not sign anything at all other than to pay your bill

6 Do not take recommendations from others on facebook or anywhere else do your own research.

I have attached photos for others to see my treatment and after effects, before and after these injections. Apart from the odd headache, I was physically fit and strong with reasonable muscle shape, which has all disappeared and I feel shockingly ill every day.

This is a desperate plea. If anyone out there can please help me to locate a doctor or hospital that is reasonably priced that can save my life I would be most grateful. While I said don't take recommendations from others, I have nothing to lose as I'm dying and would willingly pay for someone who can help with my issues ASAP.

I am really upset with myself for rushing into treatment, which I know is killing me, so please avoid doing the same at all costs.

Please refrain from telling me how stupid I have been. I know and have regretted every minute for the last 13 weeks. I am too ill to travel back and I would give anything to get my life back.

Thanks Barry

TLDR : Answer Summary
A harrowing account of a patient who underwent treatment for a concussion in Pattaya, Thailand, resulting in severe complications, including significant weight loss, muscle degeneration, and abnormal kidney function. The patient expresses regret over the rushed decision for treatment and shares detailed after-effects, urging others to avoid similar experiences. Commenters suggest seeking reputable hospitals, obtaining medical records, possibly pursuing legal recourse for malpractice, and emphasizing the importance of being cautious with medical treatments abroad. The overarching theme stresses the necessity for thorough research before medical procedures in foreign health systems.

To be honest you behaved like an immature little child. The doctor could treat you like dead meat?? Don't blame the hospital but yourself. Do you know the word "No"? Why you didn't leave the room? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Note all my comments about lack of free NHS service in all but very few cases where the patient has worked overseas for a British connected business. Otherwise free NHS goes after 2 years. It is resdience not nationality, passport of National Insurance contribution-based. It isn't good advice to go to a country wheer private costs are not at US or Japanese levels, but nonetheless are very high. The same is true for legal fees - wildly high.

Note my point about no free NHS access if out of UK for 2years or more. Entitlement is based on residencce, not nationality, passport of National Insurance contributions. The one exception is if you have been overseas working for a firm with a British Connection. Why do Brits keep continuing a belief in a fantasy rather than checking reality in healthcare before leaving the country? Residence is now the be all to end all and not just in health care, but, as an example accessing public housing.

Hi Barry, thanks for sharing .. I

And i feel sorry for you.. I’m working with the healthcare system in Thailand and though this is rare it can happen.. normally a private hospital is highly concerned about their reputation (and good you don’t mention name here

Regarding the injections you mention in the comments, Kenalog (Triamcinolone acetonide) is a corticosteroid used to treat inflammation and Chirocaine (Levobupivacaine) is an anesthetic used for pain relief. The combination could be used for therapeutic purposes, but their use must be carefully considered by a medical professional based on the individual case.

For the symptoms you’re experiencing, including loss of sensation and muscle mass, it’s important to seek immediate medical attention. Specialists in neurology or internal medicine might be able to provide an assessment and suggest a course of action.

You should probably pursue legal Action and Complaints:

1. Legal Consultation: Consult with a local lawyer who specializes in medical malpractice. They can provide specific advice based on Thai law and the details of your case.

2. Hospital Complaints Board: File a formal complaint with the hospital’s internal complaint board or patient advocacy service if they have one.

3. Medical Council or Board: In Thailand, there’s likely a medical council or board that oversees medical practice and ethics. File a complaint with them regarding the treatment you received.

4. Consumer Protection Agency: Thailand has consumer protection agencies that might offer avenues for complaints against services, including medical services.

5. Embassy or Consular Assistance: Contact your country’s embassy or consulate in Thailand. They can provide guidance, especially if there’s a language barrier or legal complexities.

6. Documentation: Keep detailed records of all your medical treatments, interactions with doctors, and any communications related to your case.

In Thailand, medical malpractice claims can be filed in Thai courts, and they are based on liability for wrongful acts. To pursue a medical malpractice claim, you would need to establish that a medical practitioner acted negligently or unlawfully, failing to meet established standards of medical practice, and that this resulted in injury or death. It's essential to have evidence in the form of a medical opinion from a practitioner attesting to this negligence [oai_citation:1,Medical Malpractice Claims in Thailand | Siam Legal International](
***************************************************************************

The Consumer Case Procedure Act 2551 and the Consumer Protection Act in Thailand define a consumer as any person receiving medical services, from either a government or a private hospital. If damages from medical malpractice occur, a consumer can file a Consumer Case in court. This approach can be beneficial as it often allows for a faster court procedure without court fees [oai_citation:2,Medical Malpractice in Thailand](
******************************************************************************

Regarding the timeframe, the Thailand Civil and Commercial Code stipulates that a claim for damages arising from a wrongful act must be filed within 1 year from when the wrongful act and the person responsible became known to the injured person, or within 10 years from the day of committing the wrongful act. If the claim for damages also falls under criminal law, which may provide a longer statute of limitations, then the longer period applies [oai_citation:3,Medical Malpractice in Thailand](
******************************************************************************

In terms of the legal process, damages awarded in medical malpractice cases in Thailand are typically based on quantifiable losses, such as expenses and lost income. Intangible losses like pain and suffering are less commonly awarded compared to Western legal systems. Additionally, medical negligence claims usually require expert testimony from qualified medical professionals [oai_citation:4,Medical Malpractice in Thailand | Bangkok Lawyers](
*********************************************************************

Given the complexity of medical malpractice cases in Thailand, it is advisable to consult with a qualified lawyer who can provide specific guidance and ensure that your claim is filed within the appropriate timeframe. They can also assist in gathering and submitting all relevant evidence to support your case.

This is my best advice .. if you want to share more of your medical information, feel free to PM me..

I'd just like to say I'm really sorry for what has happened to you.

It must be a really terrible and scary time for you.

What happened to you should not have happened.

What's done is done.

All one can do now is make the best of what cards life has dealt you.

I find the most useful thing to do in such helpless and treacherous situations is to practice daily gratitude. That's all you can do to enjoy what you have and cope with the hard stuff.

My heart really goes out to you.

I can't believe I'm the only one here that actually has some empathy towards you, while you're in such a tragic situation.

This is so sad for me how cold and cruel people really are.

I mean, honestly, not 1 person here has a heart for an old man suffering?

What a bunch of psychopaths.

I wish you all would grow a human soul.

It's people that do this that makes our world so hard and horrible for everyone.

Cmon ppl, let's make the world a better place. Let's start with love and care.

Hi, it might be worth it to get an appointment online with any of neurologist on staff (Usually they are professor doctors who teach interns at the hospital) at Chulalongkorn or Ramathibodi hospital in BKK for second opinion. After you received a confirmed appt., before you go, please get your medical record from Bangkok hospital at Pattaya and bring it along. Chulalongkorn, Siriraj hospital or Ramathibodi hospital in BKK are reputable teaching hospitals, you could be treated there with affordable fees.

and others If any good comes out of this let it be Brits understanding that if out of UK for 2+ years they have lost free access to NHS. You pay as a foreigner and sometimes NHS is more expensive than private, if probably mostly not. Entitlement is through residence not nationality, passport or having paid National Insurance. The one exception to the two year rule is if while overseas you have been working for a British firm.

I have had four different experinces.

Three were absolutely fantastic.

The fourth was a disaster...fortunately only a very minor problem. No matter how much I complained they just didn't want to know.

My advice is ALWAYS check on the history of the doctor who is treating you.

But one think I was taught by people who've traveled S.E.A is always get traveler's insurance.

Thank goodness I've never had to use it.

I've had the typical upset stomach or something minor but I know if I have to leave in an emergency my traveler's insurance will pick up the bill.

Never heard anything remotely like this.

You are saying it's Bangkok Hospital Pattaya.

This hospital has a good reputation with standard professional procedures and English speaking staff.

And for most Pattaya Expats it's the first choice.

A dishevelled Doctor???

Didn't speak English??

Even though Medical Schools in Thailand use American textbooks?

No consultation before treatment???

No Q&A with written notes??

No explanation of the treatment???

You had concussion but flew to Thailand???

IF there is truth in the story try Bumrungrad Hospital Bangkok.

It's in the World Top Twenty most years.

That said hospital wanted to do a full prostatectomy...after I went to complain of not being able to urinate ...one ultra sound and I was added if I have the money they can do it tomorrow...I did not feel right about how quickly he came to a diagnosis and as quickly talking about money . I returned home to Canada...and after many ct scans , ultrasound and mri , they found a large cancer tumour pushing against my urethra blocking my peeing ...I had a 12 hour surgery ...to remove it after many consultants of cancer surgeons ....

If I had gone for the quick conclusion of enlarge prostate ...I would be dead today

My only advise ..yes , broken bones , flu etc ...go to that hospital ....but never take them seriously...on serious health matters ...get another opinion

Well, you have been less than forthcoming about all the facts. You were in relatively poor health before being knocked out in the UK (how? fight? car crash? sports), you left without seeking advice while there, you not said when the diagnosis of concussion was actually made (the diagnosis needs to be done right away). You were well enough to be sarcastic to an honest question. You were slow to reveal the medication given, which turns out to be entirely normal for pain management. You've been repeatedly told these drugs would only be in your system a few weeks, but keep ignoring that. You did bad mouth a doctor, because you criticised his appearance, and then accused others of covering up. Given the frailty of your health (diabetes, no gall bladder, possible pancreatic cancer) before coming back to Thailand, you should have stayed in the UK. As it is, unless you see a doctor, you are likely to further deteriorate. No Facebook Miracle.

Offering help. Help being either see a local doctor or get on a plane and see a UK doctor. And use NHS online service to get some kind of triage.

Explain why you are not reconsidering getting back to the UK. You think you are dying, so what is 11 hours of discomfort compared to having a fighting chance. You will still be in discomfort sitting at home. In worst case scenario, you have pancreatic cancer. It might have been there years, but is triggered by stress (being knocked out). If so, you might have 12-16 weeks left. Of course, it's probably not that. Could well be a parasitic worm.

I have known people who have had this treatment in the USA and they also had bad reactions. You take a risk anytime you jab needles into the CNS (Central Nervous System). The pain you felt from the injections would seem to indicate you was injecting directly into the nerves.

The only symptoms I have heard of, 3rd hand, is more, long lasting, pain. But, to be fair, I wouldn't know of the good results of this treatment because people only talk about medical treatments if they go wrong.

I hope he didn't confuse what he injected you with. You did say he looked, out-of-sorts.

the injections when given are incredibly painful, I've had them before. It's odd that it's resulted in these side effects.

How come you were well enough to travel from the UK with diagnosed concussion? No doctor would allow that. Which A&E department diagnosed you with concussion and then allowed you to walk out. Did you inform the airline in the UK you had concussion. You had the nerve block treatment in September, and until just a week ago were only concerned about renewing a visa. The lidocaine and steroid would only stay in your system for 2-3 weeks. I think your sudden weight loss is not due to that. There could be a variety of reasons including cancer or HIV infection. You need to see a doctor not consult Facebook.

as a diabetic myself...you should be monitoring your glucose levels and adjust your diet accordingly....as for the Diarrhea you can get immodium ...and make sure you are hydrated ...which you are not as you say your pee is brown...2hich says your kidneys are failing...please go see a doctor who can save your kidneys ...you need 3 litres of fluid day .

The airline stopped you boarding? Why do you feel the need to regularly hiv test. Is it something about your lifestyle that flags that? There's a 100 reasons for the sudden weight loss. How did you suffer concussion, and how did you know you had it?

Could this have been a type of Botox injections? Do they use this for some sort headache treatment? It's used in some cases of brain problems.

That is my guess too. Botox is given for chronic migraine pains.

Everything is in his medical report. He should get a copy of it and seek a second opinion at any of the other hospitals many have suggested to him. I think he should go it quickly. His leg does not look so good.

Not sure why you'd have injections for concussion. If the doctor didn't speak English how did you explain your medical condition? I've had concussion and it can take a long time to recover from, but I didn't have any medical intervention for it.

Bangkok Pattaya Hospital on Sukhumvit Road. If it is this hospital then your awful experience comes as a great shock as this hospital has a great reputation. I do my annual check up there every year and never had reason to question anything they did. Can u get to Bkk and go to Bumrungrad or Samitivej hospital for advice?
