what stupid little stuff should I bring from USA to make my life easier? getting surgery soon as I get there and going to be laid up in the condo for a month after only really able to go down stairs to pickup food/deliverys from grab drivers.
Summary so far
The user is seeking suggestions on essential items to bring from the USA for easier living in Thailand while they recover from surgery in a condo, as they will be mostly immobile. The conversation shifts towards visa-related aspects and the process of applying for a Non-O visa, including the issues surrounding opening bank accounts and the potential need to exit Thailand to apply for a visa in neighboring countries.

I did it, witnessed what another man did, tourist visa exemption. The Mods here blocked my replies as "scam".

For him, it was 54,000 THB to get a bank account and 1 year extension.

He had nothing other than 60 days visa exemption. An agency sorted it all.

As others have said, opening a bank account is the problem. Without one you can't submit your non-o application.

Different neighbouring countries process non-o applications at different speeds and costs. Include that in your research for where to get one from.

Yes thank you ,a quick prelim search shows me processing time in Indonesia for this is 10 working days ,,,🙏🙏🙏

Jimmy James great, with luck it can be 5 days, possibly less. They are strict on the paperwork, make sure you have everything in order. Perhaps double check it's still no appointment needed, like Laos.

I am married to a Thai and have been for 13 years. We were married in the USA. The paperwork to register our marriage in Thailand is ridiculous! And you still need to have a Thai bank account with ฿400,000 in it for two months before you can apply for your one year extension. Good luck!

Problem is to do it in Thailand, to open a Thai Bank Account at your name.

By "here" you mean you're currently in Thailand on a tourist visa? It can be done, but it's difficult and takes time. Even Immigration will recommend hiring an agent (be careful on that), but they're being honest.

I tried this route, converting from an METV - and I will never hire an agent for things, so I gave up and followed the advice of many on this forum. Apply from outside Thailand, get your 90 day, get into Thailand quickly and get to task of opening a bank account, getting your money seasoned and your 12 month extension application ready to go.

Laos is the best option do this, takes a few days is all. Don't make this harder than it needs to be.

If you don't already have a Thai bank account you won't be able to obtain a Non-O visa inside Thailand. You would need to exit Thailand to a nearby country, apply for the 90 day Non-O visa using funds in your home account and once the visa is issued return to Thailand. Then you can set about the process of opening a bank account, depositing funds etc. You need to do this fairly quickly as the funds must be in your bank for 2 months before you can apply for the 12 month extension of stay

Not correct, you can apply inside Thailand and then you will be able to open a bank account/c.

Eddy Senior You need money in a Thai bank account, or a income affidavit from your embassy that fulfills the financial requirements to be able to change from tourist/exemption to Non-O inside of Thailand.

Not all Embassies offer the affidavit anymore.

So you'll need to get an account sorted.

You can also use a Agent, but that's stupidly expensive.

You can also go to one of the neighboring countries to apply for the Non-O there, with the same proof of finances you would use in your home country, and not a Thai bank account
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
Eddy Senior only possible if your embassy still issues income affidavits. The OP is from Australia, his embassy in Bangkok does NOT issue any income affidavits anymore

Eddy Senior this used to be possible a couple of years ago, but not now John is correct.

Eddy Senior YOU ARE WRONG BECAUSE YOU FORGOT : you cannot apply for the "change of visa type" to a 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa inside Thailand if you did a touristic entry, because as an Australian citizen, in order to be able to apply for the "change", you would need an already existing Thai bank account with a minimum of 800,000 THB already sitting in it. On a tourist visa or on a visa-exempt entry, you cannot get a bank account opened anymore since February 2025

@Eddy *******
only if your embassy still issues income certificates, his doesn't. Unless you use an agent
