Seeking suggestions on mobile services for Thailand where we can keep the same number but not have to pay monthly as we are in Thailand about 6 months per year.
Background; We’ve been traveling to Thailand the last 3 years on various visa types and just got a DTV in December. Yay! We had been topping up our original SIM cards so we had the same phone number all 3 years. However, TRUE/ DTAC just sent notification that this will no longer be possible due to new Thai telco regulation. What are the alternatives?
Thanks!
Answer summary
Expats seeking to keep their Thai mobile number without monthly fees can top up their prepaid SIM cards for extended validity. Each small top-up can extend the SIM's validity by one month. Both AIS and DTAC offer alternatives where users can retain their numbers through various plans. Options include annual packages, prepaid options, and tourist SIMs that allow for extensive data use while in Thailand without ongoing monthly charges.

If you still can't save your phone number, virtual phone numbers are always a great option. Of all the services, I personally recommend Telnum https://telnum.net/countries/thailand/ I've been using it for several years now, so I highly recommend it.
Good point Anthony, virtual numbers can be a nice backup if you can't keep your Thai SIM active without monthly fees. But if possible, I still prefer topping up prepaid SIMs like AIS or DTAC to keep my original number for those long stays.
I've used my AIS sim for years. Just top up every month and get 80GB data for 300 baht. And if I dont top it just tells me that I didn't get the plan and it waits for me to top up to add the pla automatically.
I think what DTAC and True tried to tell you, is that you need to register your SIM. Just walk into one of their shops with your passport and get it done.
Many people don't know that you don't need any active plan or package on your phone to keep the SIM card and SIM number alive. Every time you do a top up of funds for any amount to your prepaid SIM card, it extends the validity by 1 month. So for example, if you top up 20 baht 12 times in a row, your SIM card and phone number's validity is extended by 1 year. There's no recurring charge, and the balance from your top ups just sits in your account waiting to be used. When you come back to Thailand, just open your carrier's app on your phone and select a data/voice package that suits your needs for the period you are in Thailand. The rest of the time, just check the app which shows your remaining topped up balance and your SIM's validity date, and top up small amounts as needed to extend the validity.
AIS one to call I have had same number for 14 years currently valid a year ahead with a top up of 20 Baht per month the when I Thai I use the money I've topped up with to buy a add on package giving Data unlimited whilst in Thai. Various different packages depending on speed required and duration

I use dtac 1 year unlimited data for 2500b.. cheaper than monthly by far. if your sim expires after 1 year you have 2 months until they cancel it but it's easy to just renew and keep it in use. I had my same number for 7 years. 2500b is nothing for unlimited net at 10mb imo.
I've been with DTAC for the past few years and it's cheaper to pay monthly than to buy an annual plan for me. I mainly text but do watch some social media video shorts so their 30GB/month plans suit me. Speed is good if it's over 10Mbps so i choose a plan that offers 15Mbps for 300THB. The service receives Thai SMSs in Australia though i don't rely on that feature.
That’s exactly how we have been doing it. However, received this text message from TRUE;
Due to new Thailand telco regulations. Tourist SIM usage terms have changed. SIM validity can no longer be extended via top up and calls SMS are charged at 5 THB per minute per message VAT excl. effective 14 Jan 26. To continue using the SIM please re-identify at any True dtac Shop or call 1678
When we went to the shop they told us; only post-pay (annual) plan going forward.
GlobalObserver🌏 Did you try to get a regular sim(not tourist) and port your number. I have 3 ordinary sim cards - 2 with DTAC and one with AIS, haven't received any messages regarding validity, topping up as needed. With DTAC the minimum top up is 20 baht, with AIS 10.
GlobalObserver🌏 possibly this is related to it being a tourist SIM. Maybe if you buy a regular SIM it won't have these restrictions. You could also try AIS.
I forgot to add that when I'm not in Thailand I allow the plan to expire but the number is still valid then when I return I buy a data add-on using the app.
I'm using an AIS plan too. 6 month validity, 50gb/month, 1150thb (incl VAT) paid in advance. I've had the SIM for 2 years so not sure if the package is available on new SIM cards. Similarly, bought from AIS shop, not airport.
HumbleJanken I had an existing AIS sim (around an year old), they refused to provide the 1 year recharge on that number. The number wasn't important to me so I just picked up a new one.
