Not sure why you have to travel the world to obtain a visa.
There are several Thai Consulates in Australia and there is a Thai Embassy in Canberra, at all of these offices he can apply for a Non Immigrant O Visa based on being married with a Thai National. If you both are in Thailand, visit your local Immigration Office get the hand out with requirements for the 1 year Extension of Stay based on married with a Thai National.
