TLDR : Answer Summary
With an ED visa, you can apply for various local IDs, including possibly a driver's license and a pink ID card, although the requirements and availability may vary. To open a bank account, you typically need a residence certificate from Immigration, which confirms your address in Thailand. It is advised to obtain a letter from your educational institution to facilitate the account opening process. While it is possible to open a bank account with an ED visa, having the necessary documents can increase your chances of success.

Reconsider if a Thai bankaccount is need-to-have or nice-to-have.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Alternative, you can use any agency office to open a bank account for you. They will charge you 5k baht. That's the fastest and easiest way to get a bank account.

It's actually not fair against you. I know a person who has an ED visa, and that person is 28 years of age. That person got bank account. Just because of ED visa. Is that fair?

I think more than anything it’s just to stop people oooenijg accounts on tourist visas and visa exempt and only allow more long term visa holders. I think if you are under 50 but have a long term visa people would be able to open them ok like your friend on the ED visa for example. I’m not sure of the ins and outs but I’ll find out

ED visa is 1 year, so you might have a point of the length of visas. But it doesn't cost me anything, I can ask my agent who helped me with opening a bank account in Bangkok bank.

@TcDj ******
yeh it’s always good to have options for people so ask them so we know

@Jim *******

@TcDj ******
yeh something has happened recently. I have a Bangkok bank account and have had one for a long while but I always referred friends and Facebook associates to my trusty agents but like I say atm I only have one to send them to
Jim ********
@TcDj ******
but unfortunately getting alot more difficult to get for under 50’s 🤷‍♂️
TcDj *******
@Jim *******
Agency never asked me about my age when I was in the office asking for opening account. I think you need to be over 50 to get a retirement visa, not a bank account.
Jim ********
@TcDj ******
just a couple of examples
Jim ********
@TcDj ******
nah a lot of my agents I’ve used in the past have all messaged me to say they cannot open bank accounts for under 50’s anymore. In fact out of the 6 agents I’ve used before for people only 1 can still do it 🤷‍♂️
TcDj *******
@Jim *******
Ok, I actually didn't know you had to be over 50 to get a bank account. But thanks for sharing this info with me 😉🍻
Jim ********
@TcDj ******
it was never the case btw and like I say I still have an agent that can open for under 50’s so there are agents out there that can still open them but a lot are not able to anymore

Ask the school to give you papers to open bank account. They ask the government for it, it may take like a month. Then take those to the bank.
Graham ******
You need a residence certificate from Immigration to open a bank account

Do you know what are the requirements for getting it?
Henrik *****
Look at the website of the Immigration office you will use, since they slightly differs.
Graham ******
@Kai *****
usually just a TM30

in Nong Khai, immigration wouldn't give a certificate of residency, just the receipt for my tm30 showing I filed it. Banks needed/wanted the certificate. Got my driver's license and also a certificate of residency because the Transport office requested it. Took a copy of the certificate to the bank and they wanted the original. Huge pain, I was on the 90 day Non-O and they still gave me grief.
Faye *********
Some immigration offices require you to have done your first 90 day report before issuing a residency certificate, some don't.
Charles ********
It highly depends, really visa doesn't matter much at all. You can get a drivers license if you meet the requirements to get a drivers license. You can get a pink id card in some places with little requirements and in some it's almost impossible.

A bank account is pretty easy, you can really open on any visa, but having an Ed helps. If you get a resident certificate, and a letter from you school you shouldn't have an issue, but it can be done without as well, but you might have to try multiple places and be persistent.
Michael ********
Are you refering to the Pink ID if so dont think they will issue that with ED visa
Siddique ********
Yes you can open a bank account
