TLDR : Answer Summary
The affirmation from the British Embassy, often referred to as a Certificate of Non-Impediment (CONI), is generally valid for 3 to 6 months, depending on the country where the marriage will take place. It's recommended to use it within 30 to 90 days of obtaining the document. Additionally, it's important to specify the month and province where the marriage is to be registered to ensure its validity. Previous marriage documentation may also be required.

I did it in December with the intention of marrying in January at Bang Rak…don’t, you book an appointment but it doesn’t is only to check your paperwork. The waiting time to marry was 45+ days. I changed my affidavit and married in Buriram. The embassy are very efficient and the swearing of the affidavit is simple process (do your research by visiting the website). I offer a very strong recommendation for SUKO translation services based in Centralworld. I chose them partly on recommendation and because MOFA are based in the building. That was irrelevant (and the place is full of ‘agents’) because SUKO did the translations via their Chiang Mai office AND arranged the legalization with MOFA in CM. A great service. We then took the paperwork to our local amphur to see if they would marry a Farang and Thai (which you can do at any amphur). They were great and married us in December (despite the affidavit saying January). They also married my daughter and son-in-law in January.
The affirmation is valid for up to 3 months, and you need to specify which month and which province you are registering the marriage in.
As a side not, be aware though, I had to wait about 6 weeks to get an appointment at the British Embassy in Bangkok to get the affadavit.
You will also need to get the affadavit, and a certified copy of your passport (can get the two documents at the same time from the embassy) translated into Thai and legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
If you've been married and divorced previously then take that certificate with you too to the embassy
Yes it will expire in 3 to 6 months but recommended it to be used in 30-90 days and best to check with the Amphur you intend to use to get their interpretation of the rules.
In this day and age , less people do it, as so much hassle and expense should it not unfortunately work out!
You do realize you’ll have to renew your visa yearly , 90-Day … You must continue to do your 90-day address reporting at immigration, even with a yearly visa.
Also, You must renew your 1-year extension of stay (Marriage Visa/Non-O) every year, which requires submitting new bank statements and, in some cases, photos of you and your spouse at your home. Which they come knocking at your door, at an unexpected time and date!
My USA friend had to have photo taken sat on double bed together in the bedroom, and they have two children together, married 5 years!
Same with our UK friend, 1 child already expecting another later this year!
Both couples in their early 30’s , wives Thai .
Both have to do sudden boarder runs!
So look at what’s expected from you and know what to expect! so no surprises down the line!
They are cracking down on rules, due to illegals, breaking the rules!
I can only say what’s happened to my friends, others may have a different story!
I have a marriage visa, just renewed for 12 months 2 weeks ago, it shouldn't be a nightmare if they have all the paperwork. The retirement visa is even easier.
Ann_Bisson132 if your friends are doing border runs then they dont have correct visa. They do not come knocking on your door at all times, they come for an arranged visit on your first 12 month extension to make sure its a real marriage. I have lived here a few years, never had an unexpected visit, yes you do submit photos and bank statements each year when you apply for an extension, this is to make sure you have the funds to support yourself. The 90 day report is to show you live at the same address, you can do this online in 10 seconds. never had a single issue with immigration.
Ann_Bisson132 no, rules haven't changed. 12 month Extension of stay isn't really any different than before, so why would your friend be dashing off on a border run?
