Morning everyone, I'm currently living in Chiangmai on a 12 month Non O retirement visa, that expires in January.

I entered on a 60 day tourist visa that was extended for 30 days and have had the 90 day updates done on time.

I have 800K in a bank untouched for about 16 months.

Thai medical insurance due for renewal in March.

I rent a condo, that in January, will have about 8 months left on the contract.

I wanted to ask advice about going to the immigration office and submitting the application for a new visa for the next 12 months.

Is it a pain, will I be jumping through hoops, or is it relatively straightforward?

I'll admit to having limited patience when dealing with bureaucracy ๐Ÿ˜ on the plus side I have a Thai girlfriend to help with completing forms and telling me I'm being an idiot. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'm not against using a visa agent, but if it's a fairly simple process I'd prefer to do my own leg work.

Thanx

TLDR : Answer Summary
A member currently living in Chiang Mai on a Non O retirement visa is seeking advice on the process for renewing their visa which expires in January. They have maintained a sufficient balance in their bank account and are looking to handle the application themselves, aided by their Thai girlfriend. Responses to their inquiry indicate that the renewal process is relatively straightforward, especially if all paperwork is in order. Many suggest visiting the immigration office to acquire a checklist of required documents, compiling them, and applying with the necessary materials before the current visa expires, ideally with a partner to assist in communication.

okay, I suggest GET some patience dealing with thai bureaucracy :O especially if you can't speak thai :O . Getting a yearly extension of stay is NOT beyond the ability of most foreigners i've come across. Go to the immigration office, get the hand out that lists the required documentation you need, compile it, get your bank letter, update your bank book and go apply for the extension. You can do it in Chiang Mai when you have 45 days or less left on your current extension AND there is no down side to going early because they add the year extension to your current expiration date.

If you feel you need an agency to hold your hand, push paper for you Google is your friend, the group is not. This group is designed to help people do their own extensions.

it is a simple process, if you have limited patience than make sure you are prepared. Visit the Immigration Office, show your passport ask to make a new 1 year Extension of Stay and ask the hand out with the latest requirements. Go home, tick the list if you have the needed copies, when all done, go with your girlfriend to Immigration hand it all over and relax.

Although we haven't experienced renewing our extension all I can say is that we completed the initial process at CM, non O based on retirement and then the one year extension. We did this ourselves without any complications, we ensured all the relevant paperwork and documentation was up to date and met the requirements. The staff at the immigration office were helpful and it was pain free.
