Hi All, my wife and I are hoping to retire to Thailand ( Hua Hin) early next year and would appreciate the advice of this board on the the most cost effective way of getting the appropriate Visa, we don't want to try and "cheat the system" so looking for legitimate route. I would really appreciate if anyone could confirm my understanding of the requirements and if possible suggest a more cost effective method of us both getting Visas without tying funds up for so long.

I am 66 & my wife is 59 and are both UK citizens. The Non Immigrant O and A seem to suit us better as would prefer to stay for a while before deciding if we want to commit to a 10 year stay.

As far as I understand we cannot get a dependant visa for my wife if I am on a retirement Visa so it seems to me that our only option is to both apply for the Non Immigrant Visa & both deposit 800k Thb in a bank account. For that first year we would deposit 65k Thb per month to use as proof of income so that after year 1 we can take out the 800K Thb for one of us and then leave the second 800k in the bank for the extension.

As for medical insurance if you get the Non Immigrant extension it looks like this is not needed, when getting the extension am I correct in assuming (dangerous I know) that medical insurance is a requirement? I've seen multiple comments where people suggest self insuring which is what I would prefer but I don't see how this is possible if Insurance is a Visa requirement??

Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions
Answer summary
A UK couple planning to retire in Hua Hin, Thailand, seeks advice on the most legitimate and cost-effective way to obtain the appropriate retirement visas, specifically focusing on the Non-Immigrant O and OA options. They aim to avoid complications or 'cheating the system,' and are gathering information on financial requirements such as the necessary bank deposits (800,000 THB) and the implications of medical insurance. There is discussion regarding the differences between the Non-O and Non-OA visas, with comments on their respective requirements, extension processes, and possible strategies to navigate their visa applications.

A Non O can be extended to 12 .months giving you 15 months in total then is is renewed every year.

The Non-O is a much better choice for most people. The Non-OA requires insurance form one of 14 Thai companies who may or may not approve the coverage, and who may or may not pay out a claim.

With the Non-O you are free to shop any insurance company, from any country, self insure, choose travel insurance only, or go without.

The official route is to apply for a Retirement Visa from the Thai Embassy, the only option being the OA Retirement Visa, which includes compulsory Insurance. In the past many people have come to Thailand on a 90 Day Tourist Visa, then got an agent to arrange a Non O Visa and a Bank Account. then arrange there own Medical insurance with vastly more options available. When Thailand transitions back to a 30 Day Tourist Visa I am not sure if this path will still be open, as I am sure they will try and block this loop hole, at some point.

Colin Erith I have no idea what you’re talking about. Seems like you’re just making random things up. Firstly, there’s no such thing as a 90 day Tourist you clown. Are you seriously this ignorant?

that's not the only option. You can get the non-O from your Thai embassy as well. They have both always been available. You are the one who decides which one you are applying for by choosing that option in the application.

Curious being from the UK, with UK having most of its yearly budget going to paying pensions and benefits, do you ever worry they will change the benefits/pension payments or raise the age and you’ll become ineligible? Currently UK GDP is lower than every single state in the United States. Lower than West Virginia. It helps UK has their own currency but looking at the situation, I don’t see how UK doesn’t change the system within the next 5 years. They don’t have the money and can only afford to pay it now by taking on debt and devaluing the currency

KnowledgeableMoose5909 Sad but true indictment of the UK but luckily I'm not dependant on the state pension as I have other income sources. Also once leaving the UK the pension is frozen at the level when leaving the country so I have made all financial plans around frozen pension.

Everything is doubled up you will find. Get your ducks in a row. Spend a lot of time finding the right Visa for you.

Do that at home.

There is a significant cost for setting yourself up.

Flights

Visa

Medicare

Accommodation prior to finding your condo/ house

Condo deposit

Buying some wheels

On and on it goes.

Minimum $10,000US

Do NOT attempt to source stuff from overseas. Use a Travel insuranc policy for three months. Find the important astuff IN country.

Be prepared to be suprised, things are almost guaranteed to change, you may end up someplace you never really considered.

I just applied for the non-oa for my husband and my daughter and I were able to be approved as dependents. The non-oa was $200 but is good for one year and is multiple entry, so really the easiest route imo. It does require health insurance. I was able to get all 3 of us on the same plan and it was just $79 USD/month for all 3 of us with a higher deductible. My husband is 62.

Please share the name of your insurer. I'm paying a sum many times larger than you are.

you'll have have to purchase a Thai insurance policy from the list of approved Thai companies for future extensions, if you decide you extend based on the non-OA.

You can use a foreign insurer. They, the insurer, need to sign a Foreign Insurance Certificate. This is the route I took for my Non O-A after being rejected, or ignored, by the Thai insurers on the "approved" list.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a comprehensive reply, just one more question, with the non O-Visa are there any restrictions on leaving and re-entry, I am thinking my wife has an elderly parent and may need to come back to UK for a while in the case of parents ill health etc.

no restrictions, other than having a re-entry permit to keep your stamp alive and being back in good time for an extension

Clive Winearls when on the 12 month extension inked in you can then purchase a multi-entry re-entry permit for 3800B which is good for the year

You're getting mixed up between the non-O, and the non-OA visas. They are both retirement visas, but have much different requirements.

The non-O is the visa that most people get. It starts with a 90-day visa from the Thai embassy. Once you enter Thailand you have 90-days permission to stay, but in reality you only have about 30 days to get everything in place for your extension inside of Thailand. That's because the requirement to apply for your extension is that your 800,000 must be in the Thai bank for a full 2 months already when you apply. So if you don't get the bank account opened and the funds transferred within the first 30 days, you won't be able to apply for the 1-year extension. This visa has low requirements, no insurance, no criminal records check, no health check. It's basically just the financial requirement. Both you and your wife would both have to apply for your own visas, and use your own proof of funds for extensions (so that means you both need your own bank accounts with your own 800,000 in it).

The non-OA visa is a 1-year multiple entry visa. When it is issued by the embassy it will be valid for 1-year from the issue date, and each time you enter Thailand within that 1-year, you will receive a 1-year entry stamp (or as long as your mandatory insurance policy covers, if less than 1-year). This visa has much higher requirements including mandatory insurance, health certificate, criminal background check, and financial requirements. The biggest difference here is that many embassies WILL allow your spouse to apply for the trailing spouse non-O Visa if you have a non-OA, but they will not allow that if you have a non-O. So if your embassy allows this, you would only need one bank account with 800,000 baht for extensions in Thailand. The drawback is you will require insurance forever on if you continue wanting to extend this in Thailand.

You can get a non-OA or a non-O from the embassy. You are the one who decides, because you choose the one you apply for. You can get a non-O inside of Thailand as well, though that's increasingly rare. A non-OA is not available inside of Thailand.
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
@Munzie ******
no, they do not. A non-O visa doesn't require health insurance regardless of where you apply. Only the non-OA requires.

on O.A. is only a multiple entry if you pay for it!
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
@Janin *****
the OA is a multiple entry visa. It's already built in the visa.

The O is a single entry visa. And you cannot pay to make it multiple entry. You can pay for a re-entry permit which is nowhere near the same as being a multiple entry visa.
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
KnowledgeableMoose5909 because a multiple entry visa gives you a brand new stamp that's the full duration of the visa on every entry. A re-entry permit just keeps an existing permission to stay alive if you leave. There are no news stamps nor any extra time involved.

I’m

Not sure how getting a multi entry permit is very different? You just pay an extra fee and your visa now has multi entry. Soooo different??
