TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion around the visa initiative to simplify cross-border travel within Southeast Asia is ongoing but lacks concrete progress. Many commenters express skepticism, citing that such proposals are often made but rarely implemented. Recent discussions with neighboring countries, such as Cambodia, were mentioned, but overall, it reflects a longstanding concept that could take years, if ever, to be realized.

Should be in about 10 years if at all. It’s a pie-in-the-sky idea.

Government proposals are a dime-a-dozen in Thailand and you never hear about 99% of them again

Brandon Thurkettle, it’s wild, and that visa would greatly boost tourism in Southeast Asia.

wouldn't really change much of anything. People go to Thailand don't care about going to Laos

yes, but once tourists realize they can visit multiple countries with a single visa, I think many will be willing to give it a try.
