TLDR : Answer Summary
When traveling to Thailand from Australia for three months, there are various ways to transfer or exchange money with minimal fees. Key suggestions include using services like Wise for bank transfers to a Thai bank account, which often provides better exchange rates and lower fees. Bringing cash to Thailand and exchanging it at local exchange booths may also yield good rates, but travelers should check multiple locations for the best deal. Using ATMs can incur fees, so it's advisable to withdraw larger amounts at once or to withdraw inside banks to avoid higher charges. Ultimately, the best method may depend on the amount being transferred.

Bring your cards is the safest way.

Wise or cash both will cost about 0.5%

if you bring cash, or use wise or whatever, no way you going to avoid fees; how much fees and what's the best has a lot to do with how much. different methods will give better rates depending on the transfer amount.

Bring cash, biggest bills possible, exchange there. Before I knew, I was exchanging at my bank in US and only getting

From experience ….

This is from Wise ….

If you or a friend have a Thai bank account, use Wise to make a transfer ahead of time and save even more. Not only does Wise use the real mid-market exchange rates (which almost always beats the banks), but because your money is received and sent locally in both your home country and in Thailand, all those nasty international fees magically disappear. Give it a try.

So what to do is …..

Send cash from your US Bank to your Wise account.

In Wise, exchange from USD to Thai baht when you are happy with the exchange rate.

Send Thai baht from Wise to your Thai bank account.

Withdraw Thai baht from your Thai baht bank account at ATM.

Doing it this way you are saving yourself a lot of cash….

Low or no fees from US bank.

A very good rate of exchange. Better than US and Thai banks.

A small Wise fee to send.

No charge to withdraw from Thai bank at ATM.

+1 To Wise. It's been terrific for funelling cash to BKK bank over the years. Used Remitly a few times as well. Can never have to many options

Wise account is easy and inexpensive. Transfer to Thai baht then send it to your Thai bank account.

The exchange fees are very low, exchange rates excellent and only a small fee of 44.78 baht.

Take cash with you, Wise to move money across currency in accounts. Avoid ATMs.

Western union is giving a slightly better rate than wise for me

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can legally bring 29,400 aud with you when you fly in, then get it exchanged once here, I use Super rich. For larger amounts I've read many here set up a Wise account, some use revolute, and other such services.

certainly in the UK they also have a limit BUT if the xray spots a pile of cash and you not have a bank receipt to show you withdrawn it you get held for questioning, suspect money laudering

There is no way to do it without fees. The fees are either going to be tacked onto the transfer of funds, or will be built into the exchange rate. Even if you bring cash and exchange it you're going to be paying fees to the exchange place that is built into the exchange rate.

Most people use Wise to transfer to their Thai bank account, or if your bank doesn't charge extra fees you could use your ATM card and withdraw money with a 220 baht ATM fee. Just make sure you reject when the ATM asks if you want to let the ATM do the conversion for you.

I just came over...with cash...went into the bank to deposit it...but they still made me go outside and exchange it....🙄

Then back into the bank to deposit the money.

Still think I got a slightly better rate then just transferring from Australia to Thailand.

Transfer via Wise into your Thai Bank account.

Depends on the amount you want to transfer. Over ฿500k, probably a bank wire transfer, less, probably Wise. ATM fees can add up but are per transaction. So if you get ฿30k withdrawal then the ฿220 isn't much percentage. Some banks, credit unions or investment accounts will refund ATM fees

@Tony *********
he can avoid the fee by withdrawing inside the bank.

@Stuart **********
I was thinking he may have wanted to use ATM for monthly living expenses...
Stuart ***********
@Tony *********
same applies though Tony, he can avoid the 220 baht charge by withdrawing inside the bank large or small amounts (depends if they want the convenience of a local ATM or are willing to queue up in the bank for a few minutes).

Take cash
