TLDR : Answer Summary
To get Thai currency in the most economical way, expats in Thailand can consider several options: withdrawing from ATMs despite a 220 baht fee per transaction; exchanging money at banks without the ATM fee; using a local Thai friend for withdrawals; or transferring funds through services like Wise or Western Union. It's important to avoid ATM currency conversion fees by selecting 'no conversion,' ensure strategic withdrawal amounts, and consider bank options like Schwab that reimburse fees. Each method has its pros and cons depending on fees and limits, so it's recommended to assess the best approach based on individual circumstances.

ATM and select “CONTINUE WITHOUT CONVERSION “ so you don’t get charged the additional fee of 40+USD

Each withdrawal will cost 220 baht here plus whatever your bank charges,I would go into the bank with your card and passport and take as much as you can in one shot most ATMs allow 20,000-30,000 a shot

I read that many have problem getting a Thai bank account. If you know a Thai we'll enough, open an account in their name, but you only have the card..

Or, for just a short holiday, bear the cost of ATM withdrawals, just draw the most cash you can each time.

It really is no big issue, considering most tourists spend like they're millionaires at the bar....;-)

If you withdraw cash from a.t.m always make.sure you do not accept conversion. Withdraw without a.t.m conversion. It will save 5%

‼️this is very important; always push “continue without conversion”. Then it’s your own local bank who does the conversion.

I have a Schab debit card. They refund all ATM fees and has a $1K USD limit per day. and allow two withdrawals in a day so I can get to the $1K limit in baht. Not sur what the month limit is . I opened an account with Charles Schwab specifically for this benefit. I use Bangkok Bank ATM's because they allow for larger withdrawals of baht than other banks, 25K baht. They seem to give a good exchange rate. Cash at Super Rich, which now has a new name, is probably the best overall. They want new US bills and give the best rate for $100 bills.

ATM with debit card that reimburses ATM fees (Schwab for one, likely there are others). Declined the currency conversion (you’ll get a better rate I’ve heard).

Opening a wise account? They won’t send you a debit card but you can transfer to a thai friends account and withdraw with him

Have as many cards as possible, which type has less say, then you are less vulnerable if something happens to a card.

Before departure, check the daily and monthly withdrawal limit with the card issuer and get it if necessary. increased before departure.

What withdrawal limits others have is irrelevant because it only applies to them, as it depends on the card issuer, card type, customer status and possibly negotiation.

Also check if the cards are locked with a geographical lock, which for some cards can be easily opened and closed in online banking, I always lock my cards between withdrawals, so the cards have no value for others.

Have a card with a low maximum, which is used for everyday payments, wherever possible: shops, restaurants, bars, excursions, etc.

As these transactions do not affect the withdrawal limits.

Also pay the big expenses such as hotel with card, as it costs every time cash is withdrawn.

When withdrawing, always withdraw as close as possible to the withdrawal limit.

Select “other amount” to be able to enter the desired amount that is higher than the suggested amounts.

If the ATM does not allow amounts close to the withdrawal limit, cancel and find another ATM so that the costs per withdrawal are kept down.

If payout is denied, then lower the desired amount by 100 baht at a time until payout is achieved.

Please be aware that there may be a difference in the exchange rates in the different banks' ATMs.

Always select "no conversion".

Do not lift in very public places such as soi Bangla, often gives both worse course and worse safety, so raise discreet places.

Have a plan B if something happens to the cards.

You should get a fidelity or Schwab account that reimburses you for all atm fees at the end of the week or month . Best exchange rate with no fee.

Transfer funds from bank account to credit card , online ..Wait for it to clear onto the credit card. Go in bank with passport and withdraw the funds .. if your cards are paid in advance , no cash advance charge ..

If you owe $$$ on credit cards , then the 30,000 ATM withdrawal is best.

May not be cheapest, but you can send instant cash via Western Union app from a debit or credit card to many locations there. You will at least know in advance what the total cost will be.

A lot depends on how much your card charges for foreign transactions including cash withdrawals

exactly what I used to do before I moved here. Good advice!

All ATM transactions will charge you 220 baht. If you take out the max of 20 or 30k per time then it mitigates that fee.

Some bank branches may allow you to go inside and get money from your credit card but you have to weigh up what your card company will charge you in interest for cash withdrawals.

Usually cash to cash exchange at a street booth is the cheaper option as they don’t charge a fee.

Try over the counter in a bank with your passport as that avoids the 220B ATM fee for foreign cards
