TLDR : Answer Summary
For an EU citizen planning a 4-5 month stay in Thailand from September to January, the most viable visa options include obtaining a tourist visa, which offers an initial stay of 60 days that can be extended for an additional 30 days. This would require leaving the country afterward or re-entering on a new tourist visa or via visa exemption, each option potentially involving border runs. Alternatively, considering a multi-entry tourist visa might be beneficial as it provides a total of 6 months of stay but would also necessitate a border run or extensions during that period. Suggestions for elite or retirement visas are deemed impractical for stays shorter than six months, and it is noted that EU citizens should consult their specific nationality's visa regulations.

EU is not a country. What is your nationality?

1 tourist visa plus extention, then border run, visa exempt or another tourist visa.

Or if you can get a multi entry tourist visa is good for 6 months, but will need border runs or extentions.

Both options are pretty simple. Ignore the suggestion of elite or retirements, those are both insane suggestions for a less than 6 months stay.

the people who have trouble with it are the ones who do it multiple times a year.. As long as you have no abused anything in the past, you should not have problem.

It's totally normal for regular tourists to visit neighboring countries and come back. It's the primary purpose multi entry tourist visa.

Check with your local embassy Thailand doesnt treat EU like one country

A tourist visa gives you 60 days and can be extended to an additional 30 days. After that you'd have to leave the country although could return and repeat the tourist visa process or return on visa exempt which gives you 30 days on entry extendable by another 30 days
