Hope someone here can advise. My friend is sailing into Phuket in July, he wants to stay for around 7 months while he has work done on his boat before crossing Indian Ocean. He will be living in his boat whilst he is here. What is his best option visa wise ? Can he just sail out, stamp into Malaysia then re enter Thailand and do this 3 times ? Any help or advice would be welcome.

Thank You

TLDR : Answer Summary
A friend sailing into Phuket intends to stay for about 7 months while working on his boat. He can initially get a 30-day visa on arrival if he's from a visa-exempt country, which can be extended for an additional 30 days. Additionally, he can leave to Malaysia and re-enter Thailand twice a year to obtain further 30-day visas. However, since he will be living on his boat and having work done, it's advisable to contact Phuket Town immigration or the boatyard for information on potential extensions and regulations regarding being the captain of a foreign vessel.

I wonder if he'll require a work permit to be a captain in Thailand.

This isn't the right forum. He needs to be talking to the marina manager at yacht Haven marina in Phuket. Rules will be tied to him being skipper of foreign vessel.

This isnt the right forum?😆 Its a Thai Visa forum,I'm asking about Thai visas,I reckon its the right place to start. My mate will be anchoring in Chalong Bay and clearing in there. Appreciate your input. 👍

unless his body is Thai registered, then you still need to follow my advice. If he is sort then the visa rule will be connected to the vessel

You're not making sense.

There are specific rules about how you enter Thailand by sea as to whether you are the Captain, Crew or a passenger on a boat/ship and they don’t differentiate depending on size of the vessel.

I’d assume he’d be the Captain so there are certain rules about what he could do as regards to leaving without the vessel (if needed to). Best to check at the Phuket town immigration office to see what they’d advise.

On entry via sea and assuming he hasn’t bought a tourist visa and that he’s from a visa exempt allowed country he would get 30 days on arrival and can extend for 30 days. He could leave to Malaysia and re-enter twice in a calendar year to do the same.

However if they are having work done on the boat that prevents them from leaving than it’s best to contact the vessel services department in Phuket Town immigration to see what options are available to them.

The boatyard can give them documentation as to why the vessel can’t leave and get an extension but I’m not not up on what may be available.
