Apologies in advance if this question has been answered before. Looking to move back permanently to Thailand with my wife. What is the best visa? What is the yellow book, and how do I get one? How do I open a bank account? What proof /ID do I need? We have a house in my wife's name, where we will reside I will travel back and forth to Australia for work. Is it acceptable for proof of income if my own business ( company ) pays into my Thai bank monthly to meet the requirement for the marriage extension? Instead of the 400k? Lots ot unpack. Appreciate any input
Answer summary
The best visa for moving back to Thailand with a Thai spouse is the Non-Immigrant O (Marriage Visa), which can later be extended annually. For financial requirements, you have two options: maintain 400,000 THB in a Thai bank for a minimum of 2-3 months or prove a monthly income of 40,000 THB via embassy affidavit or documented bank transfers. If your business deposits into your Thai account can be shown consistently, it may be acceptable. To register your home in Thailand, you can obtain a 'Yellow Book' (house registration for foreigners) at your local amphur, requiring your passport, a marriage certificate, and possibly witnesses. To open a bank account, you will need your passport, visa, and proof of address.

The best visa is the type that suits your situation. You'll need to consider your needs, check the govt website and sort that question out yourself.

All those sorts of questions could get easily answered by setting up a consultation with a Visa agent. As I was prepping for my move, a consultation was the wisest decision. The agent can lay out a course of action and get everything set up to save a bunch of time and stress.

I think it is easier to get a Non -0-Immigrant Visa 90 day based on ( Retirement ) . Arrive in Thailand and get a Thai Bank Account , After 60 days , transfer 800,000 THB apply for 1 One Year Extension . Years later you can always change to a marriage Visa

Kenneth Dongphuyao No, the 800 K THB have to mature for 60 days. The first thing one has to do, not after 60 days.

To open a bank account you will need a Non-immigrant visa so get the 90 day Non-O visa based on marriage before you travel. Once here you will need a residence certificate from immigration and a Thai SIM registered against your passport before going to open a bank account so make sure your wife does a TM30 for you and gives you the receipt. Once you have the bank account deposit a minimum of 400k baht into it, which must be there for 2 months before you can apply for the 12 months extension of stay. If you weren't married in Thailand there are some other hoops to jump through to legalise your marriage certificate for use in Thailand some of which you may need to do before you travel depending on where you were married. And you'll need re-entry permits to leave and return without losing your permission to stay

Grant Richardson You’ve got a few things mixed together, but it’s all fixable.

1. Best visa (given your situation):

If you’re married to a Thai national → Non-Immigrant O (Marriage Visa) → then extend yearly. That’s the standard path.

2. Financial requirement (important):

You have two options — you don’t need both:

• 400,000 THB in a Thai bank (seasoned 2–3 months), OR

• 40,000 THB/month income proven via embassy affidavit or documented transfers

Yes — your company paying you monthly into a Thai bank can work, but:

• It must look consistent and legitimate (not random transfers)

• Immigration may ask for proof of source (company docs, invoices, etc.)

3. Yellow book (ทะเบียนบ้านเล่มเหลือง):

This is NOT required for the visa. It’s just a foreigner house registration.

You can apply at your local district office (amphur) with:

• Passport

• Marriage cert

• Wife’s house book

• Witnesses sometimes required

It’s useful for convenience, not mandatory.

4. Bank account:

You can open one with:

• Passport

• Visa (Non-O preferred)

• Proof of address (your wife’s house usually fine)

Some banks are easier than others — Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn are the least headache.

5. Proof of residence:

Your wife’s house is fine. You’ll just need:

• TM30 registered

• Possibly a simple residence letter from immigration

Bottom line:

• Yes, your income route is valid if structured properly

• No, you don’t need the 400k if you meet monthly income

• Focus on getting your Non-O + clean financial paper trail

Thai people have a blue house book.

Foreigners can get a yellow house book with their name and address in thai language.

As soon as you get the yellow house book you can get a thai ID card for foreigners.

Go to your local Aompher and ask about the requirements.

Preben Kronborg Nielsen That is correct, I have my yellow house book and my " pink ID" with the Thai national register number.

Takes a month to get the Yellow Book (Bangkok, Samut Prakan).

Then, with thai Pink ID, everything becomes easier.
