What is the best point of re-entry via Cambodia? I am hoping to get back to Chiang Mai from Cambodia without paying for a flight. I am willing to endure multiple long bus/train rides if I have to...

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion is centered around finding the best land route for re-entering Thailand from Cambodia, specifically aiming to get to Chiang Mai without incurring flight costs. Suggestions include possible border crossing points such as Ban Laem.
, I thought you were going to Chiang Mai, NOT Bangkok :/

Yes my ultimate destination is chiag Mai but it seems like the most direct route might be bus to BKK then train to CM. Unless I'm missing something

You could use Ban Laem.

I hadn't noticed you have a METV. I'm sure you're ok.
If you want to feel 100% certain, you should be prepared to show
- proof of accommodation
- 20k baht in cash (or equivalent in foreign currency)
- proof on onward travel within 60 days

Sarita I think if you have been out of Thailand for a period, and you are now in Laos and you then go to Cambodia, it looks like you are a regular tourist and you are less likely to have problems. The main issue at that border is people trying to bounce out and in on one day. They are picky about that and it is not the best choice for it. But for you I think OK.

Thank you, good to know. The only history I have is my METV visa and stamp that expired

(I'm in Laos now). Is this ok?

The bus is through Poipet/Aranyaprathet. If you have no previous visa history it should be fine I think, it's just not the best option if you have a long history of visiting Thailand in your passport. There are also a number of scams/overcharging for the visa into Cambodia but these will not affect you in the other direction. It's not the best option for a "visa run" out of Thailand but less issues if you are already in Cambodia and want to come to Thailand and don't have history and are a legit tourist who spent time in Cambodia and is not doing a border run, I don't think you need to shy away from it in that case. It's the largest and most direct border between Siem Reap and Bangkok.
