TLDR : Answer Summary
When filling out the 'Reason for extension' on the TM 7 visa extension form in Thailand, many users suggest that a simple, straightforward answer such as 'retirement' is sufficient. Various anecdotes indicate that the specifics of the explanation are not heavily scrutinized; what's more important is having the right supporting documentation. Some expats recommend avoiding terms that imply working on a tourist visa and suggest using one-word responses like 'Tourism' or 'Study'. Overall, it seems the content of the response is less critical than the applicant's eligibility and paperwork.

I filled out someone's TM7 for a retirement extension and purposely typed the word RETARDED :O instead of RETIRED. It sailed thru fine. ;)
I've seen people have the entire space filled up with b/s like I love thailand, I love the people the culture blah-blah-blah. It's not what you put on the line that matters it's your documentation.
With that being said, IF you're getting an extension of stay because you're on a tourist visa or a visa exempt entry I wouldn't put down "work" as the reason you want the extension :P
