TLDR : Answer Summary
The query seeks advice on health insurance options for expats in Bangkok, particularly regarding the costs and coverage types of policies such as Bangkok Elite. Commenters share varied perspectives: some find the high cost of hospitalization insurance unjustified and suggest self-insurance by saving money, while others provide positive experiences with specific insurers like AIA and Allianz. There are discussions around the necessity of coverage, with some recommending comprehensive plans that allow customization based on personal health conditions, and others preferring to manage minor health issues out-of-pocket.

My husband had two hernia surgeries at Bangkok hospital, private room for 3 days, close to 10k USD all covered by AIA. He pays $1000 USD per yr for insurance. So basically with that one surgery we have 10 years of insurance paid. People think they don’t need insurance and can pay out of pocket when needed but they never know what kind illness they might get, not all illnesses are like heart attacks or quick death…you might be dying for a long time while spending all your savings. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just put the money you wd pay for insurance in high interest account every month, make sure it can be accessed in an emergency

If 70, little cover and pay the first 300,000b.

Better to keep money in a bank .

I keep 1,000,000b for such.

Its basically a crap shoot ..... you could stay healthy ..... or you could get sick .... personally I don't have any health insurance, that's because I'm not afraid of death 🕶 Choose well!

Minor ailments, I pay in Thai. If something bigger happens, say, diagnosed with diabetes, I fly back to Japan where my health insurance is free. A 5 hours flight. Less than if I have to be transported from, say, Khon Kaen to a Bangkok hospital.

Nothing ever happened.

Wish you all the same health.

Alistair John Grant the comprehensive plan is a very good plan

You can omit things you don’t want like outpatient treatment dental etc and if you have any chronic diseases you can omit those as well

The more you omit the more the coverage goes down
