I may be changing my visa from Non Immigrant O* as I'm contemplating moving on from the non profit where I have been working.

If I return to formal teaching, what documents do I need to submit to the thai government? My university closed forever in 2021. Do I need to order my diploma and transcript from the state records to submit for my new visa?

Edit: Thank you everyone for your responses. They answered some questions I didn't know I had. Really what I was wondering is if I have to order a replacement for my diploma in order to submit to the government to get a teaching license. But all the comments were still helpful in other ways, so thank you.
Answer summary
The individual is considering switching from a Non-Immigrant O visa to a Non-Immigrant B visa to return to formal teaching in Thailand after their previous university closed. The discussion highlights crucial documents required for obtaining a work permit and visa to teach, including the need for an employment letter, educational certificates (possibly needing to order a replacement diploma), and a clean background check. Respondents emphasize that obtaining a suitable job offer is essential before applying for the visa, as the hiring school will facilitate the process.

It sounds like you are currently on either a Non-O based on volunteering or a Non-O based on marriage as these are the only 2 that would allow you to hold the work permit required to work inside Thailand. If you have a Non-O based on marriage you can get a work permit to teach in a school but you first need to secure a job and the school needs to organise the work permit for you. Some schools won't do that and want you to get a Non-B visa, and you need documentation from the school in order to apply for it. If your Non-O was based on volunteering then you need to go the Non-B route as above

My son is British and a teacher. He needed a degree, then found a job. School help with work permit I believe. He has been in Thailand 10 years.

To legally work as a teacher in Thailand, you need a Non-Immigrant B (Business/Teaching) Visa paired with a formal Work Permit issued by the Ministry of Labour. But you need to already have a job offer to obtain the required visa and work permit

Required Documents for the Non-B Visa:

Your employing school will provide most of the official paperwork needed:

Valid Passport: With at least 6 months validity remaining.

Official Employment Letter: Acceptance letter or contract from the school.

Approval Documents: Supporting letters from local educational authorities or the Ministry of Education.

Educational Certificates: Copy of your Bachelor’s degree or higher.

Background Check: A clean criminal record clearance certificate from your home country or from the Thai Royal Police, depending how long you have lived in Thailand

Thank you. I have been working under an O visa as a music teacher at a children's home, thus far. I greatly appreciate your comments. I have been to the Thai websites and many law office websites, but it can be difficult to find requirements for many things involving the Thai government written plainly and in detail, and that accurately correspond to with what actual practices are.

Person Person Person It sounds like you were working without a permit!

And, if your non O is for retirement, you are not allowed to work. I wouldn’t be making this public if it’s the case.

Ralph Tyson No, it's a Non O for volunteering. I teach at a children's home without pay, but I do still have a work permit card.

Ralph Tyson he said he had a non imm O visa and has been working for a non profit, which often is another name for a charitable or volunteer foundation. So i assume he obtained a work permit for his volunteer work

Person Person Person i understand. But you don't need to consult an attorney. They often aren't the experts on these hiring questions. And you don't need to already have a Non Immmingrant B visa to get the job. The school will help you get that after they hire you. Keep in mind you can only get the proper visa through the school that will hire you. And the school will have all the paperwork that you need to submit to the Ministry of Labor. The Ministry of Labor is where you should check for a list of the required documents and paperwork. However, the school the hires you will also have this information.

So your first step is to obtain a teaching job offer. The hiring school will then walk you through the visa and work permit process. You can probably save time by already having copies of required documents in your possession before beginning your job search. But, in addition to a college degree, the school may also require that you already have a teaching credential from your home country or wherever you obtained your college degree. Lack of a teaching credential could be a barrier to obtaining a teaching job, at least in an international school.

I recommend checking the international school and bilingual school websites for job openings. All the websites typically list them. But keep in mind the hiring period for the international schools occurs in the spring, with the new school year beginning in August. So most of the hiring has already occurred. But there is sometimes a position they have not yet filled, which may be an opportunity for you.

Good luck

I have included a separate comment in this thread regarding the documents and paperwork required by the Thai government. But you should confirm by checking the Thai immigration website yourself and not rely on Facebook commenters.

Keep in mind you can't obtain a visa and work permit for teaching on your own. You need to have a job offer from a specific school, which will facilitate the visa and work permit process
