Already did a search in the group to see if I could find something recent relevant to my question but no luck.. planning on a <30 day visit to Thailand next month (I'm Canadian) with a visa exempt entry, I have accommodation booked for about 10 days but not starting until 4 days after entry as I've been invited to stay with a Thai national friend for the first few days when I first arrive.. is there anything specific I need to show for that invitation in case I am asked? Already fully aware that I also should have 20K thb cash and proof of onward travel within the 30 days as well..

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian planning a visa-exempt entry into Thailand for less than 30 days should be prepared to show certain documents if asked. While staying with a Thai national friend for a few days, it's advisable to have the friend's address for the arrival card. Typically, for visa-exempt travelers, proof of accommodation (like hotel bookings or an invitation letter from a Thai national), proof of onward travel, and at least 20,000 THB in cash are recommended.

Out of reports it seems most of the time that people who are frequently visiting Thailand, like living in Thailand and only leaving the country to apply for a new visa, are asked to show the three proofs,.

If it is a once in a life time holiday, do not worry, but being prepared never hurt somebody, the proofs are:

20.000 Thb or equivalent currency in cash.

Proof of onward travel within the period you get stamped in for

Proof of accommodation, this could be hotel bookings or invitation letter from a Thai National if staying at their place.

ok thanks, i'm a previous frequent visitor over the past 15 years, having done a couple of retirement extensions, tourist visas for up to 5 months of a year, etc. but haven't visited for 2 years now.. so I guess it could be a crap shoot.. dependant mostly on the mood of the IO.. :P
