TLDR : Answer Summary
To renew a Thai driving license after 2 years, you typically need to present your old temporary license, a medical certificate, and your passport. Additionally, you may require a Residency Certificate. It is important to note that the temporary license must expire before you can obtain a 5-year permanent license, and if you are on a tourist visa, you may only be eligible for another 2-year temporary license.

I just took my yellow book, passport and old 2 year licences, 45 minutes later all done and dusted. Bike and car licence issued, simple.
Robert *******
By Thai traffic law you must have a Thai Driving License if you stay longer than 90 days in the Kingdom.
Michael ********
correct. Many people do not consider this and buy IDP time and time again.
Malcolm *******
Sounds to me it's just as easy to keep buying international licence, most Thais don't have a licence and certainly no training whatsoever
Michael ********
An IDP is only valid for 90 days for insurance and is not designed to be used long term. Repeated IDPs while living in Thailand is not recommended. Should go for the Thai licence.

LOL. no comments

I think there was new legislation this year to make a 5 day school course compulsory but I don't know if that is force yet.
Phil *******
Approoved schools are visited by a test officia, have the lectures film presentations and have the computer tests
Johnsuma ******
All schools are private, some registred some not. there is no gov. school for DL as long as I know.

PS: Schools are not allowed to deliver license, some give attestation but it has no value.
Phil *******
Private schools have similar circuits to test centre
Johnsuma ******
in surat they use a small circuit, bridge, some road sign etc... but only at the driving license dep. (konson) for the DL test. All schools train candidates on roads.

Its VERY basic, so when wife or daughter get the DL its better to continue the training of your family yourself.
Phil *******
My wife did hers at Suwannaphum .
Johnsuma ******
what city ?
Phil *******
Not the norm . Usually training around a circuit. Reverse park, stop on a line and that's it.
Johnsuma ******
sorry but my daughter & my wife both have the training in roads, town & speed roads.
Phil *******
Driving schools do not drive on the road, only around a circuit.
Johnsuma ******
there are few driving school for training if needed.
Malcolm *******
Yes I understand that, but pity about the lack of training, a video is just plain stupid,

If you live here it's far easier to get a thai d/l. ..

Yep, just did mine yesterday. It’s actually 5 years from your next birthday. That’s how mine is stamped anyway. Had to do the stupid office driving test again too and a trip to immigration to substantiate the extension of stay stamp already in my passport. But if you have a work permit the immigration trip is not required.

medical certificate, your passport and your 2 year temp license.

Remember the 2 year temp one has to expire before you can get the 5 year permanent one. Also you need to be on a long term extension. There are reports of people on tourist visas only getting another 2 year temp one again.

@T**
, what is a ‘long-term’ extension please?

Solid reliable info from Tod Daniels always. Thank you

@T**
ok maybe a privincial thing. No biggie (y)

@Val***
, I am only quoting what I know is fact in Bangkok, the 2 year temporary license has to expire to get a 5 year one. And if you're not on a long-term extension you can only get another 2 year temp one.

@Allan *****
same with me

@Tod ********
did anything change since last year? Or is it different per province? In Chiang Mai you can get it 90 day prior and within 30 after the expiration date.
Allan ******
You're right Tod.

Renewed mine on a multi entry and only got 2 years. Second renewal too.
