Do I need to renew my Thai driver's license and what documents are required?

Question

//Thai drivers license//

Aloha!

Have to renew my drivers license - was wondering if anyone knows if the translation of my german license by the consulate from last year would still be valid 🤔

Do I need to get the certificate of the DOC again?
Do I need to go through this idiot test again?

Anything else I have to keep in mind..any pointers?!

Thanks 🙃

Ask Thailand · Answer

The inquiry revolves around the renewal of a Thai driver's license and whether a previous translation of a German license remains valid. Key points include that if the person holds a 2-year temporary Thai license, their German license is not needed for renewal. Essential documents for renewal include a medical certificate, proof of residence (from various sources), passport, and the current Thai license. It's noted that obtaining a 5-year license requires waiting until the 2-year license expires and that one cannot get a 5-year license on a tourist visa.

Okay, [mention redacted], like Samwise, & [mention redacted], said IF you have a 2 year temporary thai driver's license you don't need your german license for anything.

You need a medical certificate, proof of residence (either a valid work permit, certificate of residence from the immigration office or a notarized letter from your consulate), your passport and your current thai license.

[mention redacted], asked what visa and/or extension you're currently on, and that's important too.

As far as I know you can't get a 5 year license on a tourist visa. They'll just give you another 2 year one. :/

Be advised that you wait until AFTER your 2 year license expires to go get the 5 year one. Going before it expires only gets you another 2 year license.

If you already have the 2 year Thai temp license your German license is not involved.
