Coming from the US what all do I need to have in order before moving to thailand?
Answer summary
Before moving to Thailand from the US, it's essential to prepare several key items: secure the appropriate visa (e.g. Non-O visa if retiring), have sufficient savings (a significant amount is often recommended), acquire health insurance, and gather proof of income. You should also consider opening a Thai bank account upon arrival. Aside from logistics, understanding Thai culture and preparing for the financial and social transition are crucial. It’s advised to research visa regulations through the Thai embassy and be ready for potential bureaucratic challenges.

It depends on what your objective is. Are you planning to retire here or are you just coming for vacation? How are you planning to live and work here this makes a difference to determine what you need to do before you get here.

Know which continent Thailand is situated and once you find it, do some research about the country, the people, the culture and lastly the immigrant structure.

You need your self, a bucket of money and a vision where you want to live. Most importantly is where in Thailand you want to live.

There’s numerous of different visas, suitable for almost everyone.

If you plan to move and live 365 days a year or travel back and around is different for all. Wanna work, do something or just sit on the beach rest of your life 😂

Me my self made up my mind during 6 months, from February to end of July I filled my bags and left. Still here 😆 never regretted my choice. Off course allot things can be strange and new but it’s just overcome and fix, married eventually and got a son (now 9). Worked for a few years but actually before I went to school and learned the language ;)

Now it’s retirement, travel around Thailand and to other countries for fun.

Take my son to school and pick him up, enjoy the life as it comes 😂 I’m not rich, I’m not poor and can live of a few baht per day 😂

…actually the most expensive I ever buy every year is my insurance 😂

Research into what visa you are eligible for, cost, planning (lots of it) if you’ve not already done so I’d suggest visiting a few times look at where you plan to stay, heard so many stories of people who just jump in thinking it’s simple to just move and it backfires very fast. I’ve been coming over 21 years and now finally able to split year

here and working in home country and I’m still learning. It’s great life here I live away from tourist attractions in village no nightlife (not for everyone) but it’s relatively cheap, peaceful life. Point being took me years to experience and find where I wanted to be. And remember depending on how/where you want to live will dictate how much money you need to be comfortable you choose to live Phuket for example you’re going to need to have substantially more £££ than somewhere quieter. My advice take your time visit and investigate thoroughly. Good luck

Here's a few things you might not think of at first:

Get a phone with dual SIM capability. You'll need a US number to maintain the ability for 2 factor authentication when accessing bank accounts etc online. I use Tello for US sim card, as their plans are cheap and fully customizable. Choose your minutes, number of texts, and amount of data. Start around $7 per month.

Make sure you have at least one US credit card with no foreign transaction fees. Good emergency back-up source of money, and makes buying bigger ticket items like airplane tickets cheaper.

Open a Wise account. Then create a USD interest account (3% give or take) within Wise and transfer US dollars into this account. From here you will be able to transfer to your Thai bank account instantly. Note that some US banks take their sweet time to transfer the money, Wells Fargo being one, thus my use of the Wise USD interest account. I've waited as long as six days for money from WF.

Download Thai apps - Grab, Bolt, Lazada, Shoppee, etc

Research what goods are available here and at what prices. Sell or give away most of your possessions, just keeping a few special things or unavailable products to bring with. Power tools will be of no use to you due to the different voltage.

Leave your dog with the ex wife or with your buddy. Transfer of pets is complicated and expensive, and the environment here is not healthy for a pampered US animal.

Become familiar with the process for voting while overseas. It's a government program wherein US citizens who live abroad can vote in federal elections.

David Earl That's mostly true, and a good point. You'd have to look at the input voltage for each battery charger and ensure they say 110-250 volts.

John Knox yes, I always travel with a power converter to make sure I get a clean 60 Hz and voltage. Any thing with an oscillating current motor it's required. Razors, clippers, power tools. I got a lot of tools and even a tractor, I hate to part with my tools. 🤣🤣. I might buy a house just to keep my tools in. 🤣🤣.

one of many possible visas. Review options on Official Thai visa website. Passport, enough understanding of regions of Thailand to choose where will suit you, prior time in Thailand to help you truly understand cultural, financial, language, transportation, issues you will experience. This can be a wonderful place to be. I moved here at 72 after more than 20 visits including one six month stay. I traveled to multiple parts of the country before choosing Isaan as my base. I am still weak with the language and depend a l;ot on my Thai wife whose grasp of English eclipses my grasp of Thai, and Google Translate is my constant companion. I cannot tell from what you have stated how much due diligence you have done. Please, if you have not done so, do much due diligence research. Forms such as this can give you ideas about what to research. They will give you some answers, but even research those answers, including mine. I am happy here, and it is not all sunshine, smiles and roses. It is a major life transition. It means learning to accept Thai culture and not expecting Thai people to meet the cultural expectations that ar the norm in the US. It means having a willingness to be learning every day, major amounts of patience, especially with the concept of Thai time. It means learning that while most Thais are wonderful and kind, they live and do things at their own pace. On time can be one or two or three or more hours later, which is OK in Thai culture. It can even mean canceling an appointment and not telling you unless you think to ask and confirm, and even then the confirmation can mean a time delay. I could write a book about all the myriad little things that take gracious acceptance as they differ so much from US expectations. With all that said, I love it here. I am building a small house in the countryside. I have a good car and motorbike. I have a Thai bank account, a helpful local pharmacy and a Dr. and Dentist I trust in nearby cities. I have a Thai family in addition to the US family I moved from. Nothing is all good. Andi I get up every day and review everything and there is so much good that I have no regrets for having moved here. You can D< me with questions if you want. You will get the most useful consultation from me if you have already done some dur diligence research so that your questions come from a place of some knowledge base. I wish you blessings.

Potpong_Life I agree. $30-$45k or more. My wife and I own our home and car in Thailand. No loan. It is less expensive here, but certainly not cheap. Also, there are numerous speed bumps if you don’t completely understand Thai culture.

John N Kwan it’s cheaper but not entirely cheap to live here

You have visa expenses, travel, western style meals every now and again, food and other expenses that you have to account for

I would recommend contacting a Visa agent who can help you figure out what your best options are. Better to spend the money and reduce the headaches and running around needlessly. Some if not most agencies deal with issues regarding visas and financial issues like being able to open bank accounts and things like that. It’s a lot of bureaucratic red tape and jumping through hoops, so it would be highly advisable to hire professionals.

Gregor **********
Gregor **********
Ian Stevens not true, you were always able to apply for the "change of visa type" on Immigration inside Thailand from a touristic entry to the initial 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa (you confirmed you did it, too, with the help of an agent). However since banking rules have tightened by February 2025, you can't get a bank account opened any more on a touristic entry. Thus the "change" can only be handled by a few agents, and the "full package" (bank account, 90-days visa and 12-months extension - all without own funds) costs up from 60,000 THB

Tamera Stranan how are you going to work? Most work is protected.

This is where most ppl need to stop. If you don’t Jane income or a huge savings it is very difficult.

Online work for a company in the US? Probably your only option.

Google your embassy. It will tell you what you need.

Usually a large deposit and proof of income and health insurance.

We are retiring and still needed
*****
0 baht just sitting in a bank account to get a visa. And it is supposed to stay and we have to prove it every year.

Immigration is no joke in Thailand. They take it very seriously.

You need proof of where you are staying and a return ticket if you don’t have a visa.

You’ll get 60 days and can’t apply for 30 extension. Then have to leave.

For a visa there are a lot of hoops to jump through and you need to be financially stable.

But what will ask is this, remember what you have said about my country when you or any of your loud, brash, ignoramus friends say that they’re coming to visit the motherland.
