I want to retire in Thailand but just not yet, maybe in 6 months to a year. I want to come visit and want to be able to open a bank account in advance. What do I need to do to be able open a bank account?
Answer summary
To open a bank account in Thailand, you'll generally need a long-term visa, such as a Non-O visa or retirement visa. A tourist visa or visa-free entry typically won't suffice. When you're ready to open your account, ensure you have a TM30 registration (to show your residence in Thailand), a Thai phone number linked to your name and passport, and any additional documents required by the specific bank branch you visit, as requirements can vary. Keep in mind some banks may also require two forms of ID.

When over 50 you can come on retirement visa already and can open a bank account.
No need to extend yet, just use it as a visa to visit 90 days.
Try other countries too. Thailand is not welcoming farangs at the moment. I've lived here 20+ years. Just back from Vietnam which I enjoyed immensely - like Thailand was 20 years ago.
no can do, no bank account on a tourist visa. Check the old posts this has been answerd 1000's of times already just read the past posts and save yourself the time of asking
My suggestion would be to try a 6 month stint to be sure you REALLY REALLY want to stay in Thailand. At 1 time I also was thinking of moving to Thailand permanently, but before I did i thought I would try a 6 month stay and I'm happy I did that. For 1 thing Thailand will wear on you and another just like so many other people have commented on Thailand changes the VISA rules all the time, it's very hard to keep up with it. Now I just come twice a year 1 for 60 days another for 90 days. Enjoy that very much.
Richard Dvorak I find your last comment slightly confusing.. surely there is just as much chance of any visa rule changes affecting your 60 or 90 day visa applications.. as there is of any changes affecting a married or retirement visa.. so you are going to 'have to keep up on it' regardless of your choices.. meaning the rules will undoubtedly change over time for all types of visa.. they are not based on rocket science at the end of the day.. you just learn what hoops exist and how to jump through them safely.. and given the increasing difficulties being faced by some travellers wishing to make multiple entries into the Kingdom.. a longer term visa would actually make more sense.. because they will not have to make repeated applications for short term visa's.. for me personally, having to apply more than once in a calendar year would be a real ball s ache!
Richard Dvorak I lived in Thailand for a year before they started cracking down on border runs and exemptions. I wanted to open a bank account and put $25k in it and return later to do the retirement visa. That way, the money would sit in the bank while did some other traveling back to the states and other countries.
Pick another country. It’s easier. Even if you are lucky enough to open a bank account they limit how much of your money you can withdraw. Then there immigration that change the rules daily
Steven Burton why lucky to open an account? Correct visa and documents and it's easy. In app or bank you can change withdraw limits or with draw large amounts. Initial low amounts are for your protection against fraud.
Steven Burton Don’t exaggerate the visa rule changes, it’s not true. If you want to adjust the amount you can withdraw from an ATM, spend daily off your card or app, you can contact the bank and make these changes relatively simply.
My advice is search for the answer and in doing so you will learn what it is like to retire here, obviously people like , " The Moderator" give the correct advice, but it's Thailand and since it was never colonized, answers from officials can vary which includes immigration. Come here look around not just Pattaya and the like, rural Thailand is great living in villiages you learn so much about the place its not all about beer and bars. Although we are going to a wedding today and at 0800 am beer on the beer, thankfully somewhere in the world its after lunchtime.
Pete King hi pete did they try to sell you an insurance policy . I read the conditions clearly stated not valid for foreigner or over 65s K bank yet they still attempted
John Farkas .I opened account last june 2025 .rkrungsgri. No thai drivers license mentioned. SCB two weeks ago for a second account ..need thai drivers licence..oh well..I
SC B was in a main shopping mall in Udon thani, last year all the banks I shopping mall refused me an account, including krunsgri, Sent to a smaller kgrunsgri branch, same paperwork, account open in about 35 mins and extremely helpful since with paperwork for visa etc. It really is hit and miss lol
John Farkas Don't know what bank You went to but I never needed either with Kasikorn. I don't rent or have a contract I live with my girlfriend in her house. All I needed was My passport and long stay retirement visa. Didn't need Thai phone either. Have one but didn't need it, same for my Thai driving licenses. All they wanted was my passport and visa and TM30 showing my address.
John Farkas all you did was you met bank staff that liked to pull random silly requirements out of their dirty noses. Neither a rental contract nor a drivers license is the standard requirement to get a bank acocunt opened
Scott Travels he could do a 90 day non-Immi O and open a bank account and explore the place in preparation for his retirement. Go home for a few months and then apply for another non-Immi O visa.
Probably the main gotcha will be that he needs a thai phone number linked to his passport and if he doesn’t hold the number he may have issues when he comes back.
Can put a post paid plan on hold to keep the number for a small monthly fee of about ฿60.
You'll need a long-term visa. So you'll want to apply for the 90-day non-O visa before traveling. When you're ready to move, you should be able to apply for the same visa again since you'll want to enter on that when you're ready to start doing annual extensions.
You'll also need to stay somewhere that will do a TM30 for you, since you'll need the TM30 to take to immigration in order to get a residence certificate. You'll need a Thai phone number registered under your name with your passport as well.
Other than that, you'll need whatever the specific branch you are standing in requires. Each branch manager can set their own requirements, so if you try one who rejects you, just go to the next one.
