Kasikorn bank has a new policy that started in February that you must have a 2nd form of photo ID from your home country (in addition to your passport) such as a drivers license or ID card.

strongly recommended at least two Thai banks. And, it is not up to you or your need. It is totally up to the thai banks. They decide to open your account or not. So, you are actually not a customer for the Thai banks. The banks are your customers. 😂

There is another road to the “1-year ‘Extension of Stay based on retirement”. It is called “change of visa type” and can be done on the Immigration in Thailand.

You used to arrive visa-exempt or on a 60 days single-entry Tourist Visa, and got stamped in for a 60-days stay permit.

Unfortunately, on a touristic entry it is almost impossible to open a Thai bank account, since the banking rules tightened by February 2025.

You are advised to use an agent to help you with opening a bank account. Yet, not all the agents offer this service, some do get around all those rules around it, yet only if you buy their full service: bank account opening, 90-days initial visa and 12-months extension.

The last quote I have seen for this kind of service was 60,000 THB. I have already been quoted 80,000 THB for this “full service” – and that’s without the need of own funds.

Or alternatively, has your Thai bank account already been set up during a previous holiday? Then you might be fine.

The pre requisite to apply for the “change of visa type” is, that you already have the bank account with the 800,000 THB already sitting in it, OR that you can show an embassy legalized income affidavit.

You visit Immigration and show them the bankbook with proof you got 800,000 THB is sitting in your bank account, and a proof that this money came from abroad.

You apply for the “change of visa type” from the touristic entry to an initial “90-days Non-Imm-O retirement visa”

To be allowed to apply for the “change”, you need a minimum of 15 days left on your entry stamp. And you need to show a rental contract, at least on most Immigrations. The minimum accepted on most Immigrations rental contract would be one for three months.

They will issue the 90-days Non-Imm-O for 14 days “under consideration”

After this period, you pick up the 90-days Non-Imm-O stay permit stamp.

*** as soon as you have 30 days left (on some Immigrations up from 45 days) on those 90-days stay permit, and as soon as the deposit has been sitting in your account for a minimum of two months, you can apply for the 1-year extension of temporary stay permit.

Paul McKerlie yes, it is common and standard practise of many banks since decades, that they will not be satisfied with you presenting a passport, but also want to see a secondary document of identification like your national drivers license.

Opened kasikorn in market village 2 moths ago. Passport. House rental agreement. Thai driving licences. Then they asked for my uk licence as we don't have uk I'd cards

Each bank branch in Thailand is more like a franchise so you need to go in and ask. Also be aware that if you withdraw any money from any other branch of the same bank you'll be charged a fee.

Generally, Passport, long term visa, residence certificate, Thai phone certificate(I print it from my True apps), your home country ID, depends on the branch. I provide Thai driving license then no residence certificate need.

what if you went to those banks and ask them what they needed? I opened accounts about 12 months ago with my non o Visa and suddenly there were yellow books being needed and all kinds of additional crap so since I already had accounts opened in a city 3-hour drive away, I decided not to worry about having local branches.

The Yellow House Book (Tabien Baan) is basically an official Yellow Resident Registration book for foreigners living in Thailand. While locals have a blue book, foreigners are issued a yellow one.

​Why is it useful?

​No more Residence Certificates: This is the biggest plus. You won't need to visit Immigration to pay for a "Certificate of Residence" every time you want to buy a motorcycle/car, get a driving license, or open a bank account. The book acts as your permanent proof of address.

​Smoother Admin: It often makes life easier when dealing with local authorities, setting up utilities (electricity/internet), or visiting public hospitals.

​Official Status: It links you officially to your Thai address (though keep in mind it’s a residency record, not a title deed/proof of ownership).

​In short: It takes some paperwork at the local Amphur to get, but it saves you a lot of time and hassle with authorities in the long run!

I tried 11 banks eventually kasikorn future park was successful I was Non O retire E-visa 90 days so much hassle this visa as banks dont recognise this new visa . I nearly missed my deadline to extend visa due to this

The minimum requirement for opening a bank account is always a long-term residence permit, meaning at least a Non-Immigrant O, O/A, LTR, or O/X type visa, or an Elite Privilege visa.

Some bank employees will claim you need a work permit, but this is a fabrication and simply not true.

You cannot open a bank account on a tourist visa or visa-exempt entry visa (you can, yet only possible at a very high cost through a handful of agents).

To open a Thai bank account all by yourself, you must first be registered at a residence using a TM30 form.

Then you obtain a "certificate of residence" from Immigration, in which Immigration requests the bank to open an account for you (you must tell Immigration what the COR will be intended for). Some banks will accept an long-term rental contract instead the COR.

You will also need a Thai mobile phone number. The SIM card must be registered in your name and passport number. Show the COR at the phone shop (but don't hand it over!) and ask for confirmation of the registration (or likewise a note about it on the receipt).

If bank employees become uncooperative and keep making up new requirements to get rid of you, go to another bank (I recommend Kasikorn and SCB).

If it still doesn't work after several attempts, use an agent, this should cost something like 5000 Baht.

this could prevent you from getting a bank account opened at some Thai banks, as most bank's onlinebanking requires an App on the smartphone. Four years ago the SCB bank, for example, discontinued onlinebanking by a browser and started to require a smartphone App. You need to ask around

Each bank branch can vary, go into the one near you and ask what they want to see. Most want at least a Visa, residence certificate from Immigration, Passport and 2nd proof of ID, Proof from telco of your thai phone number is matched to your passport.
