Can I open a bank account with a non-O spouse visa in Thailand?

Did anyone can open bank account with non-o spouse visa recently? (Married to a Thai )

On beginning of July i went to Bkk bank and Kasikorn bank branch in Phuket in order to open bank account for my husband. But the bank staff insisted they only accept non-o retirement visa or work permit. It’s really hassle now 😥

Thank you for every advice 🙏🏻

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses challenges faced by expats trying to open a bank account in Thailand with a non-O spouse visa. The user encountered difficulties at two banks, which insisted on requiring a retirement visa or a work permit instead. Several comments suggest variations in policies between different bank branches and recommend persistence in checking multiple locations. Necessary documents often mentioned include a passport, residence certificate, and marriage certificate. Overall, experiences may differ based on branch management and local policies.

it is really weird to me that each branch doesn’t work on the same policy. In Phuket they told me Kasikorn bank do not accept Marriage visa. 🥺

if you have 3 month non o visa, they will have to open because without open bank we can't deposit sufficient fund for converting visa for 1 year. Spouse visit visa is unacceptable for bank account opening.

they insisted that they accept Non-o retirement visa or work permit. But not accept marriage visa. 🥺 i asked them many times to be sure that they really do not accept marriage visa.

Well, she and her husband is staying in Phuket.

Did you try to open a bank account for your husband? He wasn't with you?

he was there with me. He has house ownership paper, marriage registration. But they insisted on Retirement visa or work permit. Surprised me that spouse visa didn’t help to open bank account as he married to a Thai. 🥺🥺

Just get a residence certificate from immigration and then visit other banks. It will work out eventually.

If you didn’t get a certificate of residence, get one from immigrant and try again. Perhaps let the hubby to the talking, too? Maybe they’ll see him and think big money…

That day they didn’t even mention about Certificate of residence. My husband has house ownership document and our marriage registration. They just said they want retirement visa or work permit. 🥺 my hubby couldn’t argue for more.

In a quarter of a century in Thailand, I've never understood the legal system for the entire country.

Everything is left to the discretion of the person in charge at the time.

The same goes for immigration.

Each of them operates at their own convenience.

These are the usual responses:

It's not possible.

I don't know.

I don't understand.

that is true, they do not work on the same policy, rules. We probably have to try other branches, banks until we can get it 😞

What has this got to do with the legal system? It's about opening a bank account as a foreigner.

All Star is sadly based primarily on how much engagement they have, not really about the quality of that engagement.

Kasikorn in Cha-Am 3-4 weeks ago, no problem.

Now, I was on a extension of stay, and I an account from a different branch from before, but did ask if just Non-O would have been fine, and they said it was, and sounded surprised people were having problems opening accounts with a Non-O.

Needed my passport, residence certificate and marriage certificate.

But this is Thailand, mileage may vary, and they might have misunderstood my question entirely.

Her post wasn't about sharing any experiences. She more or less asked for help. But, obviously you didn't understand that, and why would she travel anywhere? She's Thai and she's probably staying in Phuket with her husband.

"Did anyone can open bank account with non-o spouse visa recently? (Married to a Thai )"

This is a question, asking about experience.

I answered it, because I have recently done this ( and asked questions at my local Immigration ).

She does not ask for a specific location for these experiences, just that she had a bad experience in Phuket.

I told her my experience in my area.

She wouldn't need to travel anywhere, but her husband might if they refuse to open an account for him in Phuket.

I, and others, are supplying options, you on the other hand is just bringing a bad attitude.
Max *************
@Marianne *******
She's in Phuket,just saying.
Marianne ********
@Max ************
Sure. But she didn't specify experiences from Phuket, only stating that is her experience there.

But if she can't get it sorted in Phuket, traveling could be an option.

Most reports I've heard said that they are requiring you to be married to Thai or have work permit.

You just need to check more bank branches. Each office manager sets the policies for that branch. You just keep checking until you find one that works. But I would avoid Bangkok Bank

its weird for us to be told that spouses visa could not use to open an account. Bangkok bank at Thalang branch and Kasikorn Cheng talay they insisted me on this information. 🥺 it’s bothering me why these staff they do not work on the same policy. They told other people could open accounts with spouse visa. But it didn’t work for us. Probably we will try when we are in Bkk 🥺 Thanks!
