TLDR : Answer Summary
For a 6-month stay in Bangkok starting in April, you should first obtain a visa, specifically the Special Tourist Visa (STV), which allows for stays of up to 9 months. Booking accommodations through an Approved State Quarantine (ASQ) hotel is also essential. Additionally, ensure you have a valid passport and check the requirements on the Thai consulate's website for detailed instructions. It's advisable to prepare documents ahead of time, including extra passport photos, and consider getting an International Driving Permit if you plan on driving. Lastly, stay updated on travel regulations and have contingency plans for communication and finances.

Re: "a license isn't necessary for a motorcycle (scooter)" Untrue, license and registration (if self owned) are required. And if you don't have a local license any insurance is void if you crash.
Pui *****
The requirements are clearly published on the Thai consulate websites. Did you not think to look there? It's a very straightforward list of steps.

Set-up google voice number. Can be used to make calls to/from USA like normal.

Probably your N. American phone wont work here (Wifi will) you will probably need to get a new phone when you arrive. Work it out friend/family to use their phone number for your Google Voice number.

I recommend packing light. You wont need a big wardrobe and clothes can bought cheap here. You will be most comfortable/lite clothing, t-shirt, shorts, flip-flops. I brought two duffel bags of clothes, haven't open since I arrived.

Extra passport photos come in handy. You may not need them but you will use them if/when you get extensions new visas etc.

If you plan to go to another country after Thailand - you may want to get an international drivers permit (sometimes mistaken call license). I don't recommend driving a car while you are here and a license isn't necessary for a motorcycle (scooter).

If you plan to work while you are here, stop by local courthouse and get a transcript that says you have no open cases (no cases is best). If you are unable to do that at a local courthouse, go to a courthouse where you can (next city or next state).

If you plan to earn a income from the USA and import the money here, transferwise is your friend. Requires a local bank account, you can worry about that when you are here.

If you plan to be out of the USA for more than a year and do not own property. Check with whatever state you paid state tax, to see requirements for being a non-resident. Tax burden's a bitch.

Bring Twizzlers. When you arrive PM me.. I will send you my mailing address. ( I tease).

I have been here for six years. And my experience is completely different. But good point - probably there is an unenforced law that says you need a license. I wonder how many Thais driver around without a license.

good advice except you do need a motorcycle license to drive a motorcycle in Thailand (shouldn't be a surprise), especially if you are asked for one at a police checkpoint (fine of 1,000 baht if you don't have). They will accept a foreign license with International Driving Permit, or sometimes just a foreign license in English during the first three months of your stay. If you have less than that you are subject to a fine, but that's not guaranteed. Lax enforcement leads people to believe it's not required but it is. If you get away with less consider yourself fortunate.

good advice in general, just one point about the phone. If you have an unlocked phone you can change your SIM card when you get to another country and use a local service. And some phones even have two slots for SIM cards so you can leave your home country SIM card in and add a Thai SIM card.

America is a big continent:

[the] terms "America", "American(s)" and "Americas" refer not only to the United States, but to all of North America and South America. They may be used in any of their senses, including references to just the United States, if the context is clear.

Steven ***************
Using "American" as your nationality when applying for a visa won't work as it isn't an option. Same as European, Asian or African . Seeing its visa related, accuracy should be used as requirements vary dramatically between countries, especially now.

Steven ***************
@JD *******
. Thailand maybe, I concede. Try it with visas to other countries. Does your passport say you are an American or US citizen? Birth certificate? Just curious.
JD ********
@Christophe *********
Of Course my Passport says United States... But that is not the point of discussion here. The point is one person trying to forcefully tell others that they are offensively wrong in using the terms America and Americans for the Country of the USA and Americans for citizens of the USA. And my point is that in Thailand and many many other countries the people there commonly use the terms America and Americans in everyday conservations. Those who propose otherwise are just plain out of touch with what the norm is. And it is usually some ethno-centric wannabe cultural dictator trying to force their opinion on others. Instead of recognizing what the default norm is now and has been for many decades. The most commonly used terms around the world are America and Americans in reference to the country of USA and its people. And if someone doesn't like it - then they can go suck an egg.
John ****************
@Steven **************
There are two or three (depending on your source) continents with America in their name - but only ONE country.

@Jeff *********
She is out of step with 90% of the world. Using the terms America and Americans to refer to the USA and citizens of the United States is not something America or Americans is imposing on anyone. It is just that resentful people just cannot accept what people naturally do around the world.

Teya Maria - Get over yourself.

Much of the world refers to the USA as America and the citizens of America as Americans. This is what the majority of people in the world use by default. If you don't like it - Too Bad. It is not your call.

Example in Thailand - Speak to most any Thai Person... ask them about the United States and you will get a Blank Look. Because Thais universally use the term " America - pronounced -" Amer-i-ka or better yet... "à~mee-rí~gaa"

And they use the Thai term

"ประเทศ" "bprà~têet à~mee-rí~gaa"... The country of America.

Plus when speaking of Americans

Thais say: คนอเมริกา kon-à~mee-rí-gaa

or คนอเมริกัน kon-à~mee-rí~gan

คน kon = person

Teya Maria you can cease with your America / American hating diatribe...

No one cares what you think. In Thailand you are out numbered 70 million to one

And the same goes for most of South East Asia and much of the rest of the world.
John ****************
@JD *******
ALL the rest of the world - name the country, can you?¿? All that BS U wrote is. BOLLU CKS. THERE IS ONLY ONE AMERICA...
Jeff **********
@JD *******
I agree with what you say it say, it happened to me yesterday. But I don't necessarily take her as American hating, maybe just a stickler for details. Geographically she's right, but culturally she's out of step with Thailand.
John ****************
@Jeff *********
Geographically she is wrong - PERIOD. Stop excusing stupid
