What did two different visa applications reveal about course length and approvals in Thailand?

A Tale of Two Courses

I am sharing the following experience for everyone’s knowledge. Interpret the results as you will, and I would love to hear everyone’s opinions. I am presenting the facts as they happened, none of this is heresy and can be verified if anyone has any doubts.

For context, I own a Muay Thai gym that many people in this group have used (Tiger Eye) and have been involved in a lot of DTV applications, covering around 70 nationalities and applications through roughly 50 different embassies and consulates. Even with that experience, I don't consider myself the arbiter of truth. My position has always been that there are simply too many variables that we don't fully understand, and each embassy seems to weigh factors differently.

About a week ago, two different people received two very different outcomes that went completely against the conventional wisdom and advice. I understand that most people are trying to help, and I genuinely think there is a lot of useful information shared here. But I also think we need to be careful not to mistake common advice for universal truth.

The first case was a British citizen applying in London. They applied with a one-month course. They met the financial requirements, but there wasn't anything particularly noteworthy about the application, and as far as I'm aware they had no ongoing income.

They were approved.

The second case was a Western European citizen applying in Jakarta. This applicant had a one-year course, well over the minimum financial requirement, more than one million baht in liquid savings, additional liquid funds in another account, investments, a detailed financial explanation, and a professionally written cover letter. They had also recently started a business and included a well-structured prospectus explaining its future income potential, although in my opinion that wasn't even necessary because their savings alone comfortably exceeded the requirements.

Honestly, it was one of the most meticulously prepared applications I've seen.

They were given a METV. They weren’t even rejected. They were given a METV which is valid for 6 months and obviously doesn’t cover a commitment to train for one year. People are told that you must have 9 months or 12 months or you risk getting an METV. This case directly contradicts that notion. Obviously, in previous cases where applicants got a METV perhaps course length was a factor, but this case makes you wonder if that is actually the case?

Now, could there have been factors that I wasn't aware of? Absolutely. None of us ever has the complete picture.

But these aren't isolated examples from my experience.

The reason I'm sharing this is because I often see people immediately assume that if someone is rejected with a course shorter than nine or twelve months, then the course length must have been the reason. Likewise, if someone is approved with a one-year course, it's often presented as proof that a one-year course is the "safe" option. And if someone is approved with a course length less than 6 months (or even less than 9 months) they are told they got lucky.

These two cases tell a different story.

Of course, all else being equal, a longer course probably makes for a stronger application. I don't think anyone would argue otherwise. But I also don't think the evidence suggests that course length is the overwhelmingly dominant factor that it's sometimes made out to be.

My advice has always been to focus on the specific embassy you're applying through, because embassies clearly have different approaches and different expectations.

Ultimately, I think the biggest takeaway is that we should all be a little more cautious about speaking in absolutes. This Facebook group contains a huge amount of valuable information, but it's still only a sample of applicants. It may have its own biases, blind spots, and patterns that don't necessarily reflect the totality of DTV applications worldwide.

In the end DO YOUR DUE DILLIGENCE. Make a genuine intention to actually do the activity you are signing up for. Look at the embassy specific requirements because each embassy is NOT the same. Some of them have vastly different expectations and requirements.

Good luck everyone.
Answer summary
This post shares the experiences of two visa applicants for a DTV (Education) visa in Thailand, which yielded vastly different outcomes despite differing details in their applications. A British citizen applying in London was approved for a one-month course, while a Western European citizen applying in Jakarta with a meticulous application for a one-year course was granted a METV instead. The writer emphasizes the variations in embassy decision-making and cautions against assuming course length determines approval outcomes. They encourage applicants to do thorough research on specific embassy requirements and consider different factors that may influence approval.

To open a bank account, you should bring the following to the bank:

* A long-stay visa (a one-year visa is helpful)

* Proof of residence in Thailand

* A phone number registered in your name

Some banks may have additional requirements, but these were the basic documents I needed a few years ago when I opened an account with Siam Commercial Bank

You just need Baht and a Visa agent. Doing it yourself is a guaranteed way to get rejected. They like to keep all the wheels well oiled in Thailand basically.

The agent shall respect you and pass on the discount, if you know. ie Thai ID is 35Baht, not 5k Baht etc. They do respect someone who is informed, if not you'll pay.

You need a minimum of 90 day visa to start

A lease, hotel stay confirmed for the whole length of stay, take it to immigration to get residency certificate.

Then bring everything, your passport, visa page, immigration documents to Bank.

Not ever bank will do it, the most workable is Bangkok Bank.

Or the easy way is The Agency.
Pui *****

@เต๋อ ****
you're giving very outdated advice. Bangkok Bank are now considered the worst for opening accounts, and they were the ones most aggressively shutting down all accounts opened by agents last year. It was a massive controversy among Expats, with thousands of posts about it happening to them. Plus all Thai banks now require a one year or longer visa (excluding the 5 year DTV which they won't open accounts for). Of course there are rare exceptions where someone gets lucky.

Thai bank account opening MINIMUM pre-requisites:

*** have a Longterm visa, like a 90-days Non-Imm-O visa type, an LTR or Non-O/A

*** you need to be properly registered per TM30 Online System at your accommodation

*** visit Immigration and ask for the “certificate of residence”. Immigration in this document will ask the bank explicitly to open a bank account for the applicant.

*** have a Thai mobile number and the SIM-card registered to your name and passport number, show the receipt from the phone shop.

*** your passport as a valid document of identification.

Some banks will ask you for a second piece of valid identification, like your home country driver’s license.

*** a work permit (only if applicable – it is NOT a mandatory requirement!)

Here a list of NOT commonly needed requirements, but that can get asked from over-zealous bank staff:

*** a rental contract - actually irrelevant- but it is okay if you got one, or if you got a blue housebook indicating ownership of a condo.

*** a third (!) piece of identification (check above)

*** a mandatory life-insurance or accident insurance the bank offers you for yearly 5000 Baht (they love to earn a sidekick)

*** your foreign Tax-number or Social Security number (which would be okay so far, why not)

Try several branches of different banks, you should find one that opens an account for you under the minimal requirements. Sometimes it takes a day or two of running around until you find a bank willing to help you.

I don’t recommend Bangkok Bank. Better get a Kasikorn or Siam Commercial Bank account. Other good banks are Khrungthai and Krungsri

In case you consistently meet bank staff who resist and pull out of their noses random requirements, use the service of an agent. In Pattaya for example, you can get a Thai bank account opened within 2 days for 5000 THB.
Paul ****
Paul ****
if you contact each bank they will send you a list of requirements

It helps when the bank wants to sell you something else. LIke when I bought a car I did my car loan at TTB bank. Then as part of that they set me up with a bank account and their app. Nice people. Didn't even have to go to the bank and queue up, they sent a person to a coffee shop where I was at.

Probably works the same if you get insurance or anything else. But your milage may vary: different branches of the same bank can be vastly different. Heck, different people at the same branch can be vastly different.

My wife is really good at this; she's basically a bank whisperer. Brings cake and snacks for her contact at banks. ;) Then the good relationship helps when doing a mortgage or refinancing an existing mortgage, or buying some product that helps lower taxable income.
