Why did my girlfriend receive a METV instead of the DTV she applied for, and is it possible to change it later?

Jakarta, my gf applied for soft power with a 12 months (!) legit Thai cooking class course. No agency involved. They asked for further proof of financial documents, passport all pages, source and proof of income.

No regular (monthly) income but 600+k THB in the bank account in the last 4 months (they asked for 3). Also explained that money is earned through seasonal work (3 months work (earning 700+k THB, 9 months off) and that the plan is to use the DTV to educate further about Thai culture over the lifespan of the DTV.

Made a clear statement that there is no intent to work in Thailand and that the plan is to return to the next seasonal work after this course (and then back to Thailand to learn more and bring the thai culture back to the clients she works for).

We feel that everything was coherent and met all the requirements.

Still got METV for six months which does not even allow her to finish the 12 months course that was applied with. Also cannot extend or reapply from within the country after the 6 months so the course could not be completed either way with this visa.

I don't get it.

Why?

(I guess no one here can really answer...)

But much more curious:

Has anyone ever reached out to the embassy after and been able to get their METV visa changed to a DTV (due to actual valid reasons)?

Wondering if it makes sense, what's the best strategy, is it even worth it, etc.

Tried to find cases in the group here but didn't find anything.
Summary so far
The user discusses the difficulties faced by their girlfriend who applied for a DTV while attending a Thai cooking class. Despite providing adequate financial documentation and stating a non-working intention, she was issued a METV that cannot support the full duration of her course. The user is confused by the decision and wonders if anyone has successfully transitioned from a METV to a DTV afterwards, seeking advice on the feasibility and strategy for such a change.

I believe you can do 6 months extension of DTV in Thailand, why taking hassle of going out?

You mean you want a visa run to not look like a visa run ??

You are describing a border bounce and just asking for trouble. Take a proper holiday, or risk immigration scrutiny.

One can easily spend one week all around Thailand, including China and as far as South Korea and Japan. Why make it obvious? They know you are living in Thailand already, but spread your wings and visit a few places even if you have visited some of the places earlier. I am on a DTV visa, but I don't stay more than two months continuously in Thailand and no more than 6 months in a year. I have entered Thailand multiple times using my DTV visa.

why make it not obvious? You have a 5y visa anyway.

Our immigration says to us "easier you do a border run then fulfilling all the requirements and get an appointment"

I just jump over the land border with Laos and back in 1 hour, never had an issue and I have had the DTV since they first became available.

Be prepared to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the immigration officer that you still meet each and every requirement of the original DTV visa.

Be prepared to show ฿20,000 or equivalent currency on demand.

Just back from Vietnam after a 6 day trip, through immigration without any questions withing a minute, maybe 2 max. The previous run, over to Loas for a market run, back later that same day, had a laugh and joke with immigration, but no questions about visa. Simple!

I asked at Chiang Mai immigration about this. The officer said '20 minutes' it's not a visa run as you already have a visa. Ive not done 20 minutes 😅 but a dtv run is different to a visa exemption run so I don't believe you will have any problems at all

Why create problems and stick out like a sore thumb, have a nice city break for 5 nights in Penang for instance. Same day is giving off cheapskate vibes. Keep.life simple.👌

And 2 days doesn't look like a visa run?

James Mitchell he doesn't need to do a visa run because he already has a visa

you do a "visa run" to apply for a Thai e-visa in the neighbour country. A DTV is a multi entry visa, so you just do a "border bounce" or "border run". A few poster here used the correct terminology

Greg Alexander border bounce, visa run it's known as the same thing to most

I landed in BKK twice this year. One of the times I walked into the thai citizen line "by accident". I wasn't asked anything, didn't have to show anything and just got my stamp and a smile.

I was out of the country 8 days and 4 days.

Michael Liu what are you talking about? The visa is literally for people traveling to and from Thailand and staying up to 360 days at a time.

I've had my dtv for over 2 years.

One day or one week it's still going to look like a border bounce. It shouldn't be a problem but why not have a night out in Vietnam while your there?
RadiantC********

@John *********
No, if you spend several days out it won't look like a border bounce on a DTV unless you're doing it precisely at or close to the 180 day mark on every re-entry.

RadiantCamel1017 Before the DTV existed i was on a METV and was accused of doing a “border bounce” even though i had been out of the country for six weeks 🙄

people give immigration too much credit by imagining they are sensible
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
Andy Bee It's a special category visa not a tourist visa.
Andy *****

RadiantCamel1017 correct. A DTV is a 5 year multi entry medium term tourist visa. There shouldnt be an issue leaving and returning, regardless of the reason that you were given the visa eg 6 month cooking course. But immigration have the final say and if your course has ended then they may choose to deny you entry (rightly or wrongly as it’s not stipulated in the terms). But if you’re a remote worker and complying with the terms then there should be no problem and a border run is just part of the administration process, you are doing nothing against the intention of the visa.
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
Dante An METV isn't a DTV.
Andy *****
Andy *****
RadiantCamel1017 but there is nothing in the visa requirements to say that you can’t do this. It has been advocated by the official in charge of implementing the DTV

The DTV was implemented by the MFA. But they have nothing to do with enforcement or who is allowed into Thailand. That's immigration which is a completely different government agency. So what someone in the MFA says doesn't really have any bearing on the DTV.
