I’m at a loss for words. Was advised to open a Kbank or Krungthai account for my new marriage extension. Had about 25 days remaining in my current extension. Go to the bank. They say oh need at least days remaining on visa and to go to immigration to get the 60 day visiting family extension.

The manager told us this. The agent we were speaking with said as well as quite a few people on here.

So did a big trip to immigration. Got the 60 day extension and all of that fun stuff. Go back to the bank. “Oh cannot do visitor visa” despite trying to explain it’s an extension of my non O. Still wouldn’t take it. Mind you it was literally the same manager we were speaking too.

Update: Krungthai just flat out refuses to open accounts under a Marriage Visa. Only Retirement and Business visas.

Update 2: went to another K bank in a completely different city. The tellers agreed it’s an extension but the boss said it was a tourist visa and denied us. Tried 3 other banks. All waste of time. Yay.

Final update for now: went to 8 different banks in total today. We got the farthest with Kasikorn. The two branches we went to were over an hour apart. They both could not figure out the difference between the extension vs “visiting” family. Other banks required pink ID cards and yellow books, to which our local gov office has quoted numerous months to get. Some said they don’t even entertain marriage visas and my favorite was they needed 90 consecutive days of a visa to open an account haha.

I need a drink or 8 and go from there. Thanks everyone for all the replies.
Answer summary
The user faced significant frustration trying to open a bank account for their marriage visa extension in Thailand. After being advised to obtain a 60-day family visit extension, the user encountered several banks refusing to accept this type of visa for account opening, citing it as a tourist visa instead. Despite visiting multiple branches of Krungthai and KBank in different cities, they received inconsistent and often conflicting information about the necessary documentation and eligibility. Updates showed an overall reluctance from banks to cater to requests of foreigners with marriage visas, suggesting a widespread issue of miscommunication or policy variance among bank staff.

This is interesting to read as I'll be a non-O with child at some point.

However, I still really don't understand the reason for needing a Thai bank account when utilities and other things can be paid from big c, tops, lotus, or 7.

And wise and deep pocket exist.bas long as you have a Thai friend or partner to funnel transfers through that's all you need.

Sterling LaPratt if you don't have a Thai bank account then you won't be able to extend your Non-O visa unless your embassy in Thailand still issues income certificates

I had the same experience only my extension was a non -o visa, which five different banks on their website said was fine. Every single bank I went to said they wouldn't give me a Visa until I had my work visa. Several banks have tried to say that I don't qualify even after this. The truth of the matter is the banks don't even know what the rules are or they don't care. They just know that if you're a foreigner you're not supposed to get a bank account, it doesn't matter what the law or their own regulations say.

Cris Murl good on you Chris I know myself because my wife is a chinese national and we got left high and dry trying to open another bank account for her.

She was under so much stress she got knock back so many times and then a friend suggested an agent.

They have become friends.

They removed all stress and it was great.

Cost to me as well worth it.

It’s like getting a Thai driving licenses now it all changed in January 2026.

Before that it was easy and I done it myself.

But if I had to go through what they have to now. I would use our agent.

Good luck

I was endorsed by BOI for 10 years LTR-WP visa. I flew to Bangkok visa exempt, then at BOI I got a handsome 10 year LTR-WP stamp on my passport with 5 year permit to stay. With that I went to the Kasikorn at LifeStore, Bangkapi. The genius assistant manager lady immediately spotted my visa exempt entry stamp and declared "no bank account for you". I requested her many times to turn the page to see the 10 year LTR but she refused, I opened the 10 year stamp she did not look, she was so sure of herself ! Ask the bank what they require to open an account. They will give you a list.

If you don't have yellow book then you need the blue or house book+ your wife id ( she can give you a lease letter also ), add your TM30 , copy of visa non o or equivalent, letter of residency certificate to open account, passport, driving license Thai or your home license, some banks look for copy of your home bank statement and your last home tax return. SCB wanted this to open account.

K bank wanted a lot less.

Passport, non O Visa retirement. Yellow book or lease, residency certificate from immigration.

Cris Murl, I’m just stating that they showed me their checklist on the requirements for opening an account, and they are interpreting the examples as the only two non o visas that can open accounts.

I eventually had to get a yellow and pink ID and more importantly a different teller/manager as once the person says no they won’t admit they’ve stuffed it up

I too went to multiple banks in multiple towns over many weeks.

And I’m sure this is the reason for every denial.

Sounds very strange, never had any problems to open bank accounts, in 18 years........ But I have business visa, with a work permit. My first account was opened on a visa exemption, at Kasikorn, second one at Bangkok Bank. Go to the head office, since most banks are freelance, under a banks name only. The small freelance banks will turn you down, if you do not buy their expensive insurance, and make a big deposit.

Ajarn Steve It's very simple! Just visit the immigration, get the list of documents you need, put them in order and file for your visa\extension. It's not rocket science! Opening a bank account even easier! Call the banks call center. Ask them about the required documents. When you visit you branch and they say can't open the account ask them for their name to report them they will open it very swiftly. Nothing is complicated you guys just don't know how to deal with things and need someone to hold your hand for 20k to 50k.

So you already were on a 1-year "current" extension of stay based on marriage? Why did you not get your bank account opened much earlier (11 months earlier!) while you still were on that yearly extension ? That, a certificate of residence from Immigration, a Thai SIM card registered to you, your wife, marriage certificate, and maybe a second piece of identification next to your passport, like your driver's license, would have opened the gates

Cris Murl sorry for your issue. You don't need a yellow book or pink ID card to get a bank account opened. A "certificate of residence" from Immigration is enough. Some banks even accept long term rental contracts. A short trip to Pattaya would have solved your issues - a bank account opening on a marriage extension costs 5000 THB using an agent, takes 2 days

It really varies from branch to branch even within the same company.

Krung Thai typically requires a work permit mit in my experience over the years.

Couple of weeks ago I went to Kasikorn to open a joint account with my wife and they were insistent on me getting a yellow house book. Tried the same at a krung Thai branch and again insistent on a work permit.

Next month I'll go to the city (Surat.... 200km round trip) and try at the bigger main provincial branches there.

I need to renew my debit card for my personal bank account at krung Thai so hopefully I'll be able to open the joint account there since I know them from getting documents there to renew my extension etc

Face it, Thailand no longer wants long-stay visitors. They start businesses which are better run than Thai ones. They adopt children abandoned by their Thai fathers. They care about Health & Safety. Cris Murl I know it is terribly frustrating because you know those are not real rules. The fact of the matter is that most banks don't want to open accounts up for foreigners without work permits because it takes more work, more documentation, and if you are in branches that don't get many foreign customers, they don't really know how to do it.

You will always have better luck in an area that has more foreigners.

you’re not the only one.

The way I read it is, when he says 25 days left on his ‘current extension’ that is the initial 90 days when he 1st entered under a marriage visa.

In which case he certainly wouldn’t have the time to season the 40k.

But he doesn’t say how many days the bank said he needed.

Sounds like he just wasn’t organised enough to get all his ducks in a row at the right time.

kind of a complicated situation so basically I missed the deadline by I believe it was two days. Bkk bank said because it fell under the threshold, when I top it up. They will freeze my account for X number of months after.

The problem is that we are building at the moment and I am transferring a lot of money constantly. So I can’t have a frozen account. So i inquired with some agents. Who all said I need to change banks etc. they all said get then 60 day thing and open a new account. And can either then transfer in the required amount to vest for the 60 days. Or go with an agent. So did that.

I go to Kbank the next day. And now this situation is happening.

We are bank bouncing as we speak and it’s all a crap shoot.

I am definitely taking responsibility for the drop in funds, it’s 100% my fault. But to fix this small thing has turned into a cluster.

I hope that makes sense?

@Cris *****
ah I think I follow, because you didn't have the funds in place for 4 months Bangkok Bank are wanting to freeze the funds before they'll give you a letter for immigration in order to apply for your extension?

If that's the case I don't believe they freeze the whole account, only the funds covered by the letter, so as you are on a marriage visa that would be 400k, and the rest of the account continues working normally.

At least that's my understanding, I too use Bangkok Bank but have never had this problem, I thought it was only branches around the Chonburi area that did this but perhaps others do to.

You can allow your funds to drop below 400k

Just not 3 months after your extension and has to be back to 400k 2 months prior to next application to stay.

So as long as you funds didn't stop during the 3 months after and were back 2 months before your visa is due your fine.

Any trustworthy agent would have told you that surely 😉

Cris Murl your current permission to stay is considered a short term permission to stay like a tourist permission to stay and can not be extended like a non imm o or oa extension. Thats why the banks are saying no. They all may have the same view due to the crackdown on mule accounts and shady agents. You may be best to have an agent open an account for you but your PTS will expire and you can't extend it. You do need to move away from bangkok bank for obvious reasons. You may want to take a trip out and apply for a new proper visa and come back and start over

Assuming you are extending your first 90-day non-o visa.. then you simply need a balance certificate from the bank right.. they have no jurisdiction over issuance of visa's.. so i dont understand why they are discussing your qualifying criteria at all.. thats between you and immigration.. they just need to give you letter confirming bank balance and any bank statements that may be needed to support whatever application you decide to make 🤔
Cool_Ba********
Cool_Ba********
Ally S Inglish You don't understand because you seem unaware of the current issues with Bangkok Bank. They won't issue a letter unless the funds are in an account for 4 months. This is a bank issue, not an immigration issue. ;)

Cool_Bananas_😎 I'm actually fully conversant with the shannanigans surrounding BB.. but the OA keeps referring to 'they won't DO an xyz visa' etc.. without actually saying 'they will not open an account for me because'.. that was my only confusion here!

Cool_Bananas_😎ya. This was actually one of the primary issues. They were going to freeze my account or funds, it was unclear which. And I need said funds and account because we are building our business at the moment.

Ally S Inglish There are many or considerable amount of banks and branches that really do not want foreigners to open accounts. Yes, they do not want it. So what question we need in this case that they just dont want us? 😅😅

I feel your frustration. I would have a hard time keeping it together. I went to the bank once picked a number and waited about 50 minutes for them to call me. When I saw everybody else coming ajd going I went to see the manager and he informed me that service closed earlier then when I arrived. I asked so why you gave me the qeue number to wait? He didnt know what to reply.

ConfidentReindeer9537 this will be my 4th or 5th extension now haha. I was late by two days this extension. So I have been looking at alternative routes.

Because two years ago. I was late by one day and they weren’t willing to give any leeway and it cost me a ton to leave and come back and restart the process

I agree^^ branches set their own policies to some extent so you may find different branches might be more or less favourable of your circumstances. Yellow bank/krungsri seem to be the most approachable for farangs.

I think it doesn't work anymore, even for a non-o visa nowadays they sent all documents for approve to Bangkok, they say it takes a month, but in reality it can takes up to three months.

ok. You’re an expert. Is the 60 non O extension to visit family… a non O or a tourist visa???
John **********
John **********
@Cris *****
it's kind of a nowhere extension, it seems to just sit on it's own. It doesn't matter if you're on a visa exempt stamp, a tourist visa or a Non-O visa. It doesn't extend your Non-O per se, just gives you 60 days extra stay
Ben *******
Ben *******
Cris Murl you answered your own question, it's an extension on your non o, you don't get 60 day extensions on tourist visas ;)

My advice would be 2 fold, go with Kasikorn bank and try to open the account in an area where foreigners are regular users, you'd be amazed at how undertrained some of these bank employees are and they won't ask for help due to ?!?

I had one bank teller tell me, in pattaya no less, that I would need to deposit a THB cheque from a Thai bank at my home branch on koh samui, she was adament and wouldn't get confirmation from her manager, I took the same cheque to a branch in Jomtien and they deposited in my account without question ;)
Cris ******

OP
Matthew Plymale Well it sounds like their only hurdle now at the moment, is this 60 day Non O extension thing, and that prior i was like 4 days off from their 30 day requirement on my existing visa, hence why i got the 60 day extension haha. But ya we spent the entire day driving to 2 different towns visited i believe 6 or 7 different banks, two being two different kbank branches.

Cris Murl I live in nakhon nowhere 555. I walked into k bank with my Thai wife. I was shocked they didn't ask for residence from immigration or pink book and didn't jabe to provide receipt for phone in my name. She opened my passport and saw my tm47 and said that's proof where I stay and photo copied my retirement stamp and ask about my monthly pension. Took 5 minutes. I know that's not normal and I got l lucky. This was my second bank account opened. First one I did with Bangkok Bank in Bangkok andnit was an all day event with what seemed like hundreds of docs signed.. Never seen a country that makes it so difficult for foreigners. Wish you luck bit sounds like it would be best just to get an agent and not deal with anymore hoops to jump tru
Ben *******
Ben *******
BreathtakingBison5301 So that is standard then is it?

If the original stamp is a non o then the extension is on a non o.

I think you should double check your facts, a tourist visa is just that, a stamp on arrival is also a tourist visa albeit without the visa part.

There is a visa for visiting family, it's called a non o, why would the allow a tourist to extend for sixty days without changing visa first?

Back when I first came to Thailand you could get a multi entry non o visa just for visiting friends but that's another story 😉

Have a nice day 👋
Breathtaki***********
Breathtaki***********
Ben Serge You are quite incorrect about the 60 day extension on a tourist visa or even a 60 day arrival stamp.

If visiting a family member (eg wife or child) you can get a 60 day extension for 1900 baht.

Ben Serge oh. My wife has to reel me in quite often. And honestly my patience is really starting to wear with this place though.

Ben *******

Cris Murl That's the problem, it's not you or the people helping you, and I really don't want to say it bluntly hence the "?!?" I put above :(

What I would do is go and tell immigration about the problems you are having and get them to write something for the bank so they understand that you are not on a tourist visa and they are trained to serve customers in a bank and not to try and do the job of immigration, maybe leave out that last bit ;)

To be honest you come across as someone with the patience of a saint ;) I have blown up many a time on people here that just can't do their jobs properly, the cheque example I gave above was one of them, my wife was super angry with me until the cheque got accepted in Jomtien, then she realised everything I said was right and the "teller" just didn't want to ask for help ?!? ;)

Good luck, I hope you get it sorted out ;)

Ben Serge I agree. But sadly a friend we know who is married to an IO, spoke to one of the last tellers we spoke to today and it had zero effect.

Cris Murl Don't pay an agent, it's not needed, revisit immigration and ask them to write a letter to the bank for you, ask them to include a phone number so the bank can call to ask questions if they need to, paying an agent should never be considered in my opinion, especially for something like opening a bank account ;)
Cris ******
Cris ******
OP
Ben Serge well sadly the closest “tourist” area is Bangkok which is about 5 hours away. Which looks like we will be using an agent there to fix this mess anyway.

We went to two different Kasikorn banks in two different city’s. Both claimed my extension was a tourist visa. Despite the stamp literally saying “Non O extension” this place is a strain on my stress levels. Haha
