Anywhere along the BTS from Soi 2 to about 26 would suit the needs of a first time traveller. PLENTY of hotel choices, plenty of malls, plenty of food. But also plenty of local feel when you walk down the sois. And the BTS is close by for going out to explore.
Bangkok is an old city mixed with NEW. My favourite city!

Stick to locations accessible to the sky train, taxis are plentiful if not driving. Other than that it’s up to your budget, good to have free breakfast included.

Look for Adelphi on Agoda (an alley near Emquartier), for 40ish dollar a night, you will have a free washing+dryer machine and a kitchen to yourself.

Ibis hotel sukhumvit 24, beside emporium mall, bridgeway to emquartier, and easy access to skytrain for easy travel from airport to hotel. For cheaper option, Rezt hotel in sukhumvit 22 is also good, very accessible as well and just 1 block away from skytrain
FuramaXclusive Asoke. 5 minutes walk to BTS and Terminal 21 (great cheap food court). About 1100b with breakfast if you negotiate and stay a few nights.
10 minutes walk from khaosan ,all grades hotel , from 1☆ , to 4☆, Small streets ,not noisy , village atmosphere with everything needed just there ! Very close to the Chao Praya , The best area ,in BKK .
Great hotel with a great view (particularly the B-building) is Shama Lakeview - close to Asoke BTS on Sukhumvit. Get a corner room above 20th floor if you can 👍
