What are the visa implications for re-entering Thailand after multiple short stays?

As I was coming through immigration this time, about a week ago, I was flagged for spending 4 months in Thailand 🇹🇭 last year and was told I couldn’t do this again. I did go to Vietnam and Cambodia for a month after the 60 days ran out and then flew back to Krabi for a further 2 months. I didn’t realise that this was a problem. Now I am in Krabi and so I can’t apply for a DVD visa as you have to do this in your country of residence.

My plan is to pay for the visa when the initial 30 days runs out, then I will cycle to Malaysia and spend a month there. I am hoping to re-enter Thailand 🇹🇭 for a further 60 days and then fly to Nepal. Any advice on the legality of my plans.

My guess if they warned you, the next time they will turn you around and possibly blackball you for a year or two

It's people like you that are abusing the visa system and ruining Thailand. Forcing the gov to make changes. Please go back to your home country and stay there until you grow up.

ThaiBot it’s people like him that are doing what’s been allowed for decades. As with anything in Thailand, it’s not a problem until it is. Show your face and/or shut your mouth if you can’t answer the question.

ThaiBot I don’t think the guy ever had a visa. He was probably entering on a visa exempt status. About 3 years ago I tried doing this same thing. On my third entry in 6 months they pulled me over, let me in but told me I needed some sort of actual visa the next time. I’m a retired commercial airline employee and can travel staff standby for almost nothing so it was almost like commuting to Thailand from the US. I understand Thai Immigration’s logic and respect it. Would’ve been a nice set up for me but rules are rules. Fortunately it’s really not that difficult to get a proper visa.

I think you mean DTV, not DVD? I’ll defer to others on how to apply for that. I think some people have been able to apply for that from other countries while they’ve been tourists. They just have to show flights, accommodations, etc, to show that they’re actually in the country where they’re trying to apply from. But I think that consulates in different countries might have different rules, so applying from Malaysia might be different from applying from, say, Saigon.

But it sounds like the immigration officer was telling you that you couldn’t just keep coming in without a visa. And, if you want to keep coming in, you need a tourist visa (which would give you 60 days) or some other visa like a DTV, retirement visa, etc. Check with the consulate in Malaysia to see if you’ll be able to apply from there when you arrive. If not, check with the consulate in your country of citizenship to see if you can still apply through them while you’re traveling — it’s the same online process either way, you just need to submit it to the right consulate.

I’ve never applied for a DTV myself, but if you’re not a professional digital whatnot with all sorts of documented income streams, I think there are some cooking schools in Bangkok that’ll be able to walk you through the process, and even tell you which consulates their students have successfully applied from. Maybe see if there are any cooking schools in Krabi who can give you the same kind of guidance.

Good luck!

They are cracking down on only 2 entries into Thailand or year without a visa and re entry stamp. Not a new law, just starting to uphold the laws

that's only by land. There is no limits on air entry. There is no official law for amount of entries by air period.

DVD is a little outdated, that's why.

Consider Blu-ray, it's more likely.

Ant W Tailor How can anyone know if you are in your home country or simply in a different country when you apply for a DTV? It's all online (and anyway a VPN could solve any problem)

You won't be paying for any visa before your 30 days runs out, you'll be paying for a 30 day extension of stay. Entering a 2nd time visa exempt (i.e not a visa same as you currently have) will be at the discretion of the immigration officer you will stand in front of. It would help if you told us the actual dates you were inside Thailand over the past 12 to 18 months
