Hi everyone!

I finished my contract on September 30th but my work visa expires on October 27th. I want to do a border run to Laos before that to re-enter as a tourist.

At work they told me this about cancelling my visa, is it correct?

` You need to go to the immigration for cancel your visa first by bringing passport work permit and paper from us. For example if you will leave country on 21st October, I will issue cancellation paper effective cancel your visa on 21st October and you can go to the immigration from 1st October onwards. Then on 22nd Oct, I will go to cancel work permit for you'

I thought they had to cancel first.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The correct procedure for cancelling a work visa involves the employee going to immigration to cancel their work visa, which requires bringing their passport, work permit, and cancellation paperwork from the employer. The employer can issue cancellation paperwork effective from a set date, but the employee is responsible for ensuring the extension stamp is properly cancelled. It's crucial to check with local immigration and labor offices, as procedures may vary by province.

Yes this is true, I tried to cross the border without it being cancelled and got denied...once cancelled properly I had 7 days to leave.

If I remember correctly the 7 days to leave isn’t automatic. You have to submit a request for extension form which will be rejected and you get 7 days to leave otherwise you will have to leave the same day that you cancel the work extension.

, right. No automatic free 7 days when you quit a job with a standard company.

It is not free as it is an extension denied stamp and the extension application is 1900B. I assume you are talking about the cancellation of a BOI company extension where they do "look after you" hence standard company.

, that’s why I said “NO” in my comment

yes I think you are correct

Your employer is basically right. You are the one who is responsible for an extension stamp on your passport. They can support you, but they cannot cancel your extension without you.

Go to cancel your work permit and extension to leave Thailand without issue. You need to check with your local immigration office and labour office to see which is the first to be cancelled. Those procedures could vary depending on the province.

out of topic..

BTW, You have a good and understanding employer who makes the paperwork as of the last day of your current stamp so that you are not overstaying even after you finish working with them. Usually, a termination letter is dated as of the last day of your work.
