Opening a Thai bank account on a Non-Immigrant O (retirement) visa

I’m a Dutch citizen, 67, and I’m planning to come to Thailand on a Non-Immigrant O visa based on retirement.

I need to open a Thai bank account so that I can meet the financial requirements for my retirement extension.

I’m trying to understand exactly what proof of address I will need.

My questions are:

1. Is a TM.30 notification at a private Thai address sufficient for opening a bank account, or does the bank require a Certificate of Residence as well?

2. If a Certificate of Residence is required, how did you obtain it, and what documents did Immigration require?

3. If I stay with a Thai friend at her private residence and she registers my stay with Immigration, can I subsequently stay in a hotel for part of my stay, or would I need to actually remain at that address?

I would particularly appreciate replies from people who have personally opened a bank account in Thailand recently while holding a Non-Immigrant O (retirement) visa.

If you could also mention which bank and branch you used and what documents they actually asked for, that would be extremely helpful.
Answer summary
A Dutch citizen, 67, inquired about opening a Thai bank account while on a Non-Immigrant O visa for retirement. Key questions included the proof of address required (specifically, whether a TM.30 notification suffices or if a Certificate of Residence is needed), the ability to stay in a hotel after registering with a Thai friend, and details on the bank account opening process. Responses highlighted that a Certificate of Residence, obtained via TM.30, is indeed necessary. Several users shared their experiences of different bank requirements and recommended banks without complications, emphasizing the need to visit branches to clarify specific requirements.

Thai bank account opening MINIMUM pre-requisites:

*** have a Longterm visa, like a 90-days Non-Imm-O visa type, an LTR or Non-O/A

*** you need to be properly registered per TM30 Online System at your accommodation

*** visit Immigration and ask for the “certificate of residence”. Immigration in this document will ask the bank explicitly to open a bank account for the applicant.

*** have a Thai mobile number and the SIM-card registered to your name and passport number, show the receipt from the phone shop.

*** your passport as a valid document of identification.

Some banks will ask you for a second piece of valid identification, like your home country driver’s license.

*** a work permit (only if applicable – it is NOT a mandatory requirement!)

Here a list of NOT commonly needed requirements, but that can get asked from over-zealous bank staff:

*** a rental contract - actually irrelevant- but it is okay if you got one, or if you got a blue housebook indicating ownership of a condo.

*** a third (!) piece of identification (check above)

*** a mandatory life-insurance or accident insurance the bank offers you for yearly 5000 Baht (they love to earn a sidekick)

*** your foreign Tax-number or Social Security number (which would be okay so far, why not)

Try several branches of different banks, you should find one that opens an account for you under the minimal requirements. Sometimes it takes a day or two of running around until you find a bank willing to help you.

I don’t recommend Bangkok Bank. Better get a Kasikorn or Siam Commercial Bank account. Other good banks are Khrungthai and Krungsri

In case you consistently meet bank staff who resist and pull out of their noses random requirements, use the service of an agent. In Pattaya for example, you can get a Thai bank account opened within 2 days for 5000 THB.

A certificate of residency will be required from Immigration using your TM30 address as others have indicated. Note that your bank account will use that address. Once you have a more permanent location you might update your address which will require a new residence certificate.

Each branch of each bank can unfortunately have its own requirements. I have multiple accounts at different banks and the requirements for each were different. Just go into the bank that you would like to do business with and ask them their requirements. It isn't as complicated as it sounds.

Your friend will need to register you as staying at her house (TM30) within the first 24 hours after you arrive, either online or directly at your local immigration office. With the receipt from the TM30 you ask immigration for a residence certificate, then go to a phone shop and get a Thai SIM registered against your passport. With both of these and your passport visit a bank and ask them to open an account, you might need to try a few branches.

You are free to travel around but you might need to register a fresh TM30 every time you return home, ask your immigration office what their policy is on this

Note that a Thai SIM isn’t required to open a bank account, it’s only required if you want to use the bank’s mobile app

When you arrive in Thailand with your Non-O

Go to the bank of choice & ask them for the requirements, as in 2026 they seem to vary slightly

I would not recommend

Bangkok bank

- certificate of residence- Yes

Copy of statement from your Thai phone telco showing your phone number & passport number & address
