I would like to say thank you very much for the decent people who have given me answers to my genuine question. However people like.....

You really are pathetic "men" who make judgement on people you don't know. You do not belong on this group and I pity the Thai people who have to put up with you. I will leave this post on so that you can read my comments then in a few days I will block you all. You really need to grow up get an interest and do something with your life instead of trolling for no reason apart from your own pathetic gratification.

DTV and ED question.

To learn the Thai language under the visa's "Soft Power" categories, the Thai government permits me to qualify by taking approved Thai language and culture course.

How often would I have to attend the school and for how long each day. Is it daily or two or three times per week ? Is there a strict attendance timetable ?

Is the teaching in a class of many or is it on a 1-2-1 basis with an attendance agreed by the school and the pupil ?

Summary so far
The author expresses gratitude to helpful responders but criticizes certain group members for their negative comments. They inquire about the requirements for attending Thai language and culture courses under the DTV visa, including attendance frequency and class structure. Various comments provide insights into different schools' requirements and experiences with the ED visa, which may be stricter. Participants also discuss the possibility of other visa options such as retirement visas.

You're supposed to want to learn. You on the other hand want to do as little as possible. Better you stay in your own country until you learn a bit of conviction and sincerity.

A recognised course that I investigated in Chiang Mai had a weekly cultural studies class every Saturday. You could also take part in their Thai language program for no extra cost .

Each province is a bit different when it comes to the ED visa based on learning Thai. Some are stricter and needed evidence of 90% attendance (e.g. Bangkok and about 8 years ago when I lived in Chiang Rai), some are more relaxed and have schools that offer online classes (e.g. Krabi). For where ever you apply though, you do need to show you're living where your school is registered because of the residency reporting. So you can't just apply to study online in say one province and then have your permanent address in another province

Just from experience though, you will ultimately have fewer issues in general if you are of the age, and have the financial means to apply for the Non-O retirement visa and extension though.

With the non-ED I had a number of different issues including, unable to create a bank account, more issues with renewing my license, problems re-entering the country after my non-ED expired etc etc...

Martin Martin ED visa has to be renewed every 3 months...they check attendance and test you with basic conversation and all. Also...you can't go in and out the country however you want it while on ED. A mutual friend was denied entry after visiting her family for 2 weeks, while the ED visa was still valid and she had her reentry permit

Learning Thai language, alone, is not enough to qualify for a Soft Power DTV.

Apparently, however, there are Thai culture courses on offer which *do* meet the requirements for DTV, which include a module or two about the Thai language.

But learning Thai alone only qualifies you for an ED visa, not a DTV.

To learn the Thai language you'd be better attending a language school but you won't get a DTV for that. These hybrid options only exist to get round the DTV restrictions and aren't always successful. The real question is what will you do inside Thailand and how will you support yourself?

I'm retired and comfortable financially.

I'll look into an ED visa

Martin Martin doesn't look you're comfortable financially if you can't even qualify for one of the several "retirement" visas.

BC Farang nice to have options and I'm exploring these two. And you are presuming things about me that you have no idea about.

if you're retired and 50 or older then look into the various retirement visa options. Non-O, Non-OA, Non-OX or LTR Wealthy Pensioner they're much more suitable and you can still study if you want. The LTR Wealthy Pensioner is the best one but you need a high passive income, the Non-O is the most common one

I know from the language class i attended, it was 90% attendance, and immigration appeared almost once a week to check up, and photographed the whole class a few times.

Those who didnt get the attendance required, they got 1 warning, then expelled.

I cant say for all language classes obviously. Just my experience of 7 months of learning thai.

They did speak to me a few times during the immigration visits (dtv for medical) but many were on the ED visa, so perhaps the visits were more regular than they would have been.
