TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shared their experience of obtaining a 1-Year O Visa in Savanakhet, Laos based on their marriage to a Thai national. While they submitted all required documents, they were initially rejected due to a lack of proof of their wife's name change to match theirs. After their wife provided the necessary documentation from a Bangkok government office, the visa was successfully granted. Other comments discussed the reasons for going to Laos for visa processing, the different requirements that may vary by immigration officer, and the possibility of conducting similar processes in other locations.
I have just seen this post I am in savanahket now waiting for embassy to open Tuesday. Can my wife take photo of document and I get printed here ? First I have seen of this requirement
Yep docs about you wifes name change are a new requirement there. I got the same visa last week and also had to show docs for my wifes change of name - my wife had seen this on some Thai websites before out trip so luckily was prepared
I suppose this is where I get confused. Why does someone go to Laos to get the visa ? Why can’t you go to Bangkok or some other office in Thailand? I live in America with my Thai wife and plan to retire to Thailand in the future. We have had our marriage license examined at the Thai embassy in Chicago and registered in Thailand already. Just wanting to be ready.
You can't just go to some office, you need a visa to get in to the country. That's the function of embassies and consulates in foreign countries - to issue visas.
you can enter Thailand with a visa exempt. I will want to apply for a non o and eventually an extension based on marriage. Why would someone go to laos
I just did a 1yr multi entry visa in Savannakhet last week - I had the 400knin my Thai bank account but we needed cash ASAP for a family medical emergency so I went undet for a cohple of days before I could replace it. So went to Laos and will switxh back to an in country extension later.
Ernesto Galvan a visa is an endorsement or permit to ENTER a country. Why would any country issue a visa to someone that’s already in country? How is that even logical? Maybe you’re referring to discussions re extensions of stay?
