Thailand DTV Visa: Workcation or Soft Power? Looking for advice from anyone with similar circumstances.
Hi everyone,
I'm an Australian looking to apply for the DTV through the Thai Embassy in Canberra and would appreciate some advice on which route might be more suitable.
I've been working as a freelance online ESL tutor through a Singapore-based company since 2024.
My teaching has been very casual and irregular because I've also been working full-time in Australia. Earnings have generally been quite low, sometimes only AUD $30–$50 per fortnight, occasionally more.
However, I do have the following documentation:
- A Contract for Services confirming my independent contractor status.
- A confirmation letter showing I've been with the company since 2024.
- Payment records showing actual earnings from online teaching.
- Sufficient savings to meet the 500,000 THB financial requirement.
My contract specifically states that I provide computer-based online English tutoring, using my own equipment and internet connection, at a suitable location. It doesn't specify that I must work from Australia, but it also doesn't explicitly state that I'm permitted to work from Thailand but I can work anywhere in the world as its online tutoring.
My previous full-time employment was a hybrid arrangement in Australia, so I'm not relying on that for the Workcation application.
My questions are:
1. Has anyone successfully obtained a DTV through Canberra using a freelance contract with relatively low or irregular earnings?
2. Would the contract, confirmation letter and payment history generally be sufficient, or is an explicit letter authorising work from Thailand essential?
3. Is there a minimum income expec.tation for Workcation applicants, separate from the 500,000 THB savings requirement?
4. Given my circumstances, would you recommend applying through Workcation or taking the Soft Power route through an eligible Thai cooking or cultural course?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have applied through Canberra recently.
Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences.
